Alexandra Babiak announces sophomore album with her new single, “Settle Down”

Toronto, ON-based singer-songwriter Alexandra Babiak has announced her forthcoming sophomore album, Magical Thinking, with the release of her new single, “Settle Down.”

Following up her 2019 album Impatiens, Babiak leans into indie-rock sensibilities on her latest – sitting somewhere between the likes of Alvvays and Arcade Fire sonically. Featuring watery guitars, quirky drum beats, and lo-fi synth, Babiak leads “Settle Down” with her equally sweet and yearning vocals – “I’ve got something to cry about But I’m not gonna cry today / It won’t be long ’til you’re coming home to me” Babiak laments, with a touch of tongue in cheek. Babiak explains:

“This song explores reaching for a level of peace and stability but still having the demons that taunt you. It’s this internal agitation that won’t evaporate, even though maybe your surroundings are calm. Being in that state of agitation or discomfort can be necessary to move through to get to a place of mental freedom.”

Babiak teamed up with Toronto producer Sandro Perri and recording engineer Chris Stringer to record the track, along with Laura Pitkanen on guitar, Josh Cole on bass, Thomas Hammerton on keys/synth, and additional synth by Sandro Perri.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Alexandra Babiak, a singer-songwriter from Toronto, ON. I love drinking tea, and I have a black lab named Chuckie who follows me everywhere:)

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

My single “Settle Down” is out now. It was produced by Sandro Perri. It’s a really cool 80’s inspired track, and I think it’s a fun departure from my last record. This is probably the most upbeat song I’ve written, even though the lyrics are still kind of blue.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

My dreams are a big source of inspiration for me; they are a well of information I keep returning to. I also love sitting outdoors/in the park and listening to people passing by. People say the most fascinating things, and I’ve definitely pulled a line or two from drifting conversations.

Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you’d like to tell us about?

I’ll be playing a string of outdoor shows in Muskoka the first weekend of August (August 5th, 6th, and 7th)! I’ll be playing Trestle Brewery and a house concert and a couple of other places, so really excited about that!

What’s your goal for 2022?

Release music that connects with people, practice my Spanish, take lots of walks and spend time with my family.
