Interview – Kaeley Jade

Edmonton-based Métis singer-songwriter Kaeley Jade has recently released her new single, “Ego”, which follows her previous single, “Painless“.

Produced by the JUNO-nominated team at Velveteen Music, “Ego”, is a compelling examination of the ways in which unhealthy relationships can affect our emotional well-being. Reminiscent of artists like Maggie Rogers and Olivia Rodrigo, “Ego” is a raw and affecting anthem for those struggling to heal.

“I wrote “Ego” after a particularly rough night at a party, and I wanted to explore how toxic relationships can impact our mental health,” says Kaeley. “This one goes out to all those struggling to find closure.”

Listen to “Ego” below, and find out more about Kaeley via our mini-interview.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey folks! My name is Kaeley Jade, and I’m a Métis singer/songwriter, actor, and multidisciplinary artist based out of Edmonton, Alberta.

You recently shared your new single, “Ego”, what can you tell us about the writing process behind the song?

The writing process on “Ego” felt quite organic—I think in a lot of ways, “Ego” is a lot more colloquial and conversational than a lot of the other songs I’ve written, so I think that was why the lyrics and melody came so naturally to me. I was grappling with finding closure and dealing with some difficult feelings from a particular chapter of my life, so this song actually ended up being quite therapeutic for me.

You worked with the JUNO-nominated team at Velveteen Music on this release, how was that experience?

It was great—I’ve worked with the Velveteen Music team several times before, first on my debut EP, Years Ago, and again on my 2021 single, “Painless,” and we’ve built a great relationship over the years. They always made me feel right at home, and we always have a wonderful time hanging out, cracking jokes, and making music.

Hearing your music on the radio must be amazing, and you reached #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, as well as on numerous playlists. Explain how you felt the first time you heard your songs on the radio.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over hearing my music on the radio! Radio is such a shared experience between listeners, so it’s incredibly cool to think that at the same time I’m hearing myself on the air, many other people might be as well.

What else can we expect from you in 2022?

I’m currently working on the production of a brand-new musical with Trevor Schmidt at Northern Light Theatre, called Two-Headed/Half-Hearted, and it has been described as “a prairie-gothic song cycle for conjoined twins.” It will be running in Edmonton from April 21st to May 7th, and I’m crazy excited for my role in it as both a performer and the composer. Aside from that project, I am currently in production on my first full-length album, which we are hoping to release this fall, so stay tuned for lots of new music from me this year!
