Five Questions With OBLVYN

Edmonton, AB-based breakout producer, OBLVYN is back with her new single, “Enter REM”. The first taste of her forthcoming EP, “Enter REM” takes listeners on a sonic journey through OBLVYN’s vivid dreams. Mirroring the rush of falling into an otherworldly dimension, the upbeat retro-synth lead, powerful bassline, and crisp percussion form a vortex of vibrant sounds that captivates listeners.

OBLVYN shares,

“‘Enter REM’ is the first single from my upcoming EP, which is entirely based on the concept of dreams. It kickstarts the adventure by taking you out of reality and into a subconscious exploration of the dream world, where imagination runs wild and possibilities are endless.”

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hey I’m OBLVYN, my real name is Cat. I’m from Edmonton, Canada, and I’ve been playing music for most of my life. I’m a producer, pianist, and guitarist, and I’ve been making electronic music for the past 5 years.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

My music is a blend of many styles but primarily future bass and melodic dubstep. I’m very melodically and emotionally driven, but also visually driven. When I’m writing, there’s usually an accompanying story in my mind, so every song has its own adventure.

How have you been keeping creative during the Pandemic?

I’m naturally an introvert, so not leaving my house is just a normal thing for me. But with the extra time on my hands, I saw it as a chance to up my hustle. Looking back at the past year and a half, I’ve put way more time and energy into music than I was before and developed a solid work ethic while growing my skills and developing my sound. In a way, the pandemic also created an opportunity to connect more with people online. I’ve developed a more consistent social media game, reached more people with my music, and met and worked with several talented artists from around the world who are on the same ride. But while it’s been a solid excuse to avoid obligatory social events, live music is something that I’ve really been missing. Now that restrictions are lifting, I am recharged and looking forward to things being back to the way they used to be.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would say listen to “Alive” because it is my most recent song, which means the mix is probably slightly improved compared to my recent releases, but also it’s my first song ever signed to a big label so it must be objectively good! But I think that answer will change as soon as my upcoming releases are out since those are ones that I hold very close to my heart.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Some of my favourite Canadian artists right now are Dabin, Adventure Club, Tianda, Riell, Tennyson, Rezz, Lights, Celine Dion.
