Like Meghan Patrick’s mom, Alannah Myles’s single “Black Velvet” was one of my favourites. It still is, even today. So, to hear Patrick’s acoustic version of this 1989 Grammy and JUNO award-winning classic track by this JUNO award-winner herself was spectacular.
A while back, in the lead up to Patrick’s 2020 JUNO Award win for Country Album of the Year, the CBC asked 2020 JUNO nominees to cover songs from previous JUNO Award winners for their Junes 365 Sessions. So, she stopped into the CBC studios to record “Black Velvet” then posted a small sample of her performance on TikTok.
When Patrick posted a short video of “Black Velvet” to her TikTok account, the immediate response from her fans was explosive and it now has hundreds of thousands of views as well as giving her a gigantic leap in her follower count. Because of this, Patrick decided to release the full version of her take on this rock classic to all demand site platforms (DSPs).
Of this cover Patrick says,
“When I was deciding which song I was going to cover for this session, the first one that stood out was “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles. When I was growing up, it was one of my mom’s favourite songs and I remember listening to it in the car all the time and singing along to it. When I was younger I didn’t know what the song was about, I just knew I liked the melody and the feel of it. When I realized the song was about Elvis, I thought it was even cooler.”
