Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Mitchell Green. I am a folk singer-songwriter and jazz guitarist living in beautiful Victoria, BC. Music, gardening, and time with those close to me is where I find peace.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
My music is greatly inspired by living on the west coast of BC, the individuals I have crossed paths with, and my time in the interior of BC. Lately, I have found that I will have a little seed idea. I’ll play around with it for a week or so, let it rest, and then return to it at a later date to finish the song. The last stage seems to happen quickly once I sit down with my guitar or piano. When I write and record songs it always brings me a lot of joy to leave space in the song for different instruments to have a moment in the spotlight. On my most recent song “Memories of You” it features a piano solo by Jasper Barnard-Campbell and a beautiful interlude by bassist Nick Mintenko and fiddler Quin Etheridge-Pedden. I feel that my time learning and playing jazz music has inspired my folk music in this way.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
I will be performing at Centennial Square in Victoria on August 14th at 4:30 pm. My live performances feature reflective storytelling, improvisations from piano, bass, and fiddle on original folk music and timeless folk song covers. Striving to play a song a bit different each time inspires my bandmates and I to interact with one another in a spontaneous/exciting way.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I would recommend listening to my latest song “Memories of You” I feel that my bandmates and I placed the most amount of effort into this new single. I feel that it is also reminiscent of these times.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I’ve been listening to my friends Nick Mintenko, Quin Etheridge-Pedden, and Adam Dobres. I am a huge fan of Craig Cardiff’s music. There are so many elements of his music that I love. The tone of his voice, beautiful imagery in his lyrics, fantastic guitar playing, and he seems like a complete gentleman.
