Alt. indie-pop troubadour, Dany Laj & The Looks is about to release their seventh album, Everything New is New Again on September 13, 2019. The album features eight tracks including their newest single, “Annie”.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m Dany Laj, I play in a band called Dany Laj and The Looks. Music is my life. I wanted to be Wayne Gretzky till I was about 14 years old. After that, I just let everything go and devoted my life to rock ‘n roll. I am not perfect. I’ve made and make mistakes all the time. I’ve learned a lot through the years. I hope that someday everyone on this planet can find a bit of peace, love, and happiness in their lives.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
The music I make, no matter what you want to pin it with or whatever sub-genre people like to call it, is simply just rock ‘n roll. I wake up in the morning, I have coffee, maybe a bite to eat, then I plug my Telecaster in the amp and go. For the most part, I never know how it’s gonna come out. I’m just trying to write what I think may be a good song. I do tell my story through the records we make – I’m a small-town kid who left years ago. I kept myself open to situations, plenty of things happened, I experienced life, I partied hard, I fight for what I believe in, I believe in hard work, I come from a mining town, things aren’t easy, life is tough, friends come, friends go, friends die. For the most part, my songs are autobiographical, sometimes they come from the heart and sometimes from strange places. I like to keep a beat to it and I like to make things rock.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
We have shows all through North America until the end of November. Be on the lookout for them as many more are being announced. We start the tour next week on September 5th in L’esco in Montreal and we play the Horseshoe Tavern on September 6th in Toronto. Our shows are high energy and we want every show to be special in its own little way. We always want to play the show people claim they were at.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Our new single ‘Annie’. It’s a song about the DJ “Annie” who walks into the bar for her shift and I’m sitting there waiting for her to play some records.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Our friends, Pale Lips, Red Arms & Ian Blurton’s Future Now all have great new music and I think you should check it out. Canada is producing a tonne of great artists right now, I can be here all day trying to list them all but if ya want, give the new Littler You Little Me record a spin as well, it’s also really good.
