Interview – Bon Villan

Toronto, ON-based alternative rock/ electronic trio, Bon Villan is back with a brand new video for their single, “All The Way”. The track is the first single from their forthcoming album which is being produced by Jeff Hazin and is a follow-up to their 2018 debut self-titled EP.

Check out the video below, and find out more about it in our interview below.

First off, care to introduce yourselves to our readers?

We are three Torontonians who grew up on MGMT, Arcade Fire and Phoenix along with skating, biking, and hockey. We formed out of the ashes of our former bands and launched in 2018 as electronic trio Bon Villan (although our name was almost BOND Villan ?). We are lucky enough to be lifelong friends with MONOWHALES, who brought us on for our first legit show and to this day we share a jam space. We live, breathe, and $#!+ music and if you listen to us for 20 seconds you can tell.

You have released a video for “All The Way”, which is the first single from your forthcoming album, what can you tell us about the making of the video?

It was absolutely insane and literally just a crammed party where we invited awesome people. The morning after it was hard to remember if we had even shot a music video. Apparently, we set off a fire alarm, no fire though, trust. Much love to Press It and Floydian Images for capturing it all even when we Villans lost focus.

Why did you choose this particular track as the first single?

‘All The Way’ just happened really naturally and came together quicker than the other songs we were messing with. The lyrics and melody for the chorus pretty much just came out of me (Jared), I didn’t write or think about it or anything. We tried the new chorus idea over a dope drop Jules and Hanes wrote the day before and everything just clicked. The rest of the tune spiraled out from there. We were really happy with how it turned out and figured what better way to get back on the scene than with a hyped up song our friends can party to.

How would you say that your sound has changed since your self-titled EP?

Since the EP, we’ve embraced our love of Electronic production techniques/sounds. More synthesizers, more samples, and more cool effects. Our drops hit way harder, our leads are much more unique and our drums are massive. Also, the vocals are more emotionally charged. I’m less cautious now evoking more vulnerability at points and waking the dead with powerful screams at others.

You will be performing on April 11 at The Piston in Toronto, but can fans in other cities expect to see you on tour in the near future?

We are currently planning a tour of South Ontario to support the next single to be released next September. We have a bunch of listeners from outside the city and we’re really looking forward to connecting with them over the coming year.

If someone has yet to see you perform live, what can be expected?

On stage, we are a hybrid between a live band and an electronic/DJ set. I cover the vocals, and Jules and Hanes play all the live instruments (Synths, Guitar, and Bass). I bring the emotion with my vocals and performance, it’s even more intimate than our recordings. Hanes controls the big beats, synthesizers, and samples from his computer, while Jules plays a lot of the lead lines on his synth or guitar.

Last but not least, what’s next for Bon Villan?

We’ve got a lot of stuff planned for this year including a handful of new singles (look out for the next one in September) and the previously mentioned tour. We’ve also got remixes of our new singles coming out, a live video for our fans abroad and an album planned for 2020.
