“”Drowning Quitely” depicts the place I was at when I wrote it, but also where I am going. It’s a song about holding onto hope in bleak situations. A lot of people are suffering quietly right now, but there’s a reason to go on. It gets better.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey there! My name is Joshua Anthony Williams and I am a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. I started teaching myself how to play multiple instruments from a young age and began playing the drums for various artists growing up. Some traumatic events took place in my life and I ended up focusing on writing my own music to get through them. After seeing the effects that I could have on others through my music, I was motivated to continue creating.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style
My music is born out of everyday experiences. Some common and some less common. I have witnessed people young and old resonate with my songs and comment on their uniqueness.
Like many artists, it’s hard for me to put my music into one genre or box. My sounds range from soft folk to pop, to RnB to ambient.
How have you been keeping creative during the Pandemic?
I have been fortunate enough not to struggle a lot with creativity and inspiration. Up until the lockdowns, I was fairly busy with gigs and sessions. When everything shut down, it forced me into a place of quiet and a new approach. I think that sometimes we can become numb to our daily grind. I became accustomed to refining my completed works. When I saw how quickly everything changed, it made me think differently about how I create and perform. I have a newfound appreciation for every gig, every engagement, and every opportunity to play my instrument. Lately I have been experimenting with different writing styles and processes.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
My song “Drowning Quietly” is a good flagship song for who I am as an artist. It depicts the place I was at when I wrote it, but also where I am going. It’s a song about holding onto hope in bleak situations. A lot of people are suffering quietly right now, but there’s a reason to go on. It gets better.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I have been fortunate to work with a few established and up-and-coming Canadian artists. Currently, I am enjoying listening to some Bryan Adams, KD Lang, and Bruce Cockburn. I’m very excited to hear more Canadians on the radio!
