Ontario-based singer-songwriter, Kate Boothman is back with her newest single, “My Next Mistake” from her upcoming album of the same name.
Recorded at producer, Thomas Knox D’Arcy’s, Taurus Recording, in North Toronto over 2 snowy weeks in January 2019, Kate and Thom made what they referred to in the studio as a “massage rock” record.
“’My Next Mistake’ is a really relaxing record about sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll.”
Writing as they went, Kate and Thom’s life-long friendship enabled them to tuck into their shadows. This provided them with instant fodder for the moody narrative that Kate delivers as part prayer, part animal, and entirely her own. This sits nicely against the sweeping strings, heavy bass, twangy guitars, organ swells, and sometimes thunderous drums that make the trippy washed out folk scape reminiscent of something Lee Hazelwood would have dreamed up with the help of Mazzy Star.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi Canadian Beats, my name is Kate Boothman. I’m a singer-songwriter from Kendal, Ontario, and I’m gearing up to launch my upcoming, sophomore record, My Next Mistake, into this strange new world. I hope you like my latest single. It’s the title track. Thanks for having me!
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
Over the years I’ve learned that writing music is how I process life. I see my life through the lens of the tune. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the playful, like here with My Next Mistake. This song however I wrote with my lifelong friend, Thomas Knox D’Arcy. It was an experiment that turned into an accidental record. I believe that’s what’s referred to as a “happy accident”. We wrote it in a couple of hours, recorded it, and then sent it to my pal Graham Walsh who smeared the psychedelic vibe over it reminiscent of my song, I Am An Animal, from 2017. I met graham while playing in my very first band, The Real Priscillas. He recorded our ep. It never saw the light of day, hahaha, but we’ve worked together ever since. He knows my vibe.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
OMG SHOWS! Gawd, I’d love to play you a show right now rather than talk about it. This is a strange Dme to be a performing artist, never mind releasing music that will just hang in the ether. I’m a folk singer with a penchant for rock n roll. So how does that relay on stage? It’s a bit of a choose your own adventure (for me). The songs are wri[en with both solo and band in mind. For example, with My Next Mistake, it’s a crunchy rock song and that’s how I wrote it. BUT, solo, its finger-picked on an ancient acoustic guitar, and I try and whisper it in your ear so the hair stands up on your…. Be sure, that with or without the band, my shows are personal and untamed.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
MY NEXT MISTAKE obviously! That’s why I’m here.
(But secretly, when this whole record comes out, check out “Take Me With A Grain Of Salt”. Ha. The first third is the original demo, then Thom takes the production to many levels. I find it moving, and sort of perfect) BUT MY NEXT MISTAKE.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
For me, #1 is and will always be The Sadies.
Then Neil fricken Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Jennifer Castle, Kathleen Edwards, Mariel Buckley, Dan Romano, Black Mountain, Hannah Georgas, City and Colour, Mafe Leon, Luna Li, Harmer, Jimmy Bowskill, and The Hometown Beauts. I love Canadian music. I feel as though it’s actually my skeleton. The rest of me just hangs off of it.
