Self-taught creator and artist, Lubalin has released his brand new single, “cycle”.
“As humans, we’re drawn to the extremes. We like contrast. Maybe it’s the way our minds work. We have to categorize things, in order to think about them. We have to draw a line somewhere, between what something is and what it isn’t. But when you zoom in on those boundaries, between the black and the white, you find that they aren’t hard lines at all, but rather sweeping, mottled greys.”
“cycle” is from his upcoming debut EP, which tackles themes of light and dark, and discovering that the good and bad are inseparable. Check out “cycle” below, find out more about Lubalin via our Five Questions With segment, and stay tuned for his EP release on September 2, 2020, via Cult Nation.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
What’s up! My name is Lubalin and I like to make things.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
My songs usually start out as little experiments. I’ll just get an idea like, oh, what if I tried this?
Then I’ll sit down and try it out. Play around with it. And if I’m lucky, I’ll find a thread to pull on.
Listen to it, listen to what plays in my head when I’m listening to it, then try to execute what I hear in my head. Rinse and repeat, until I run out of steam…
I don’t know. I guess from the outside maybe it looks like I have a style, but I just sorta make whatever I’m feeling at that moment. I try not to overthink it.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
I don’t have any shows coming any time soon, but I’m planning a live stream set in the fall.
A friend of mine is a pianist and so we’re stripping down the songs from my upcoming EP to make them work with just the two of us. I feel like that’s gonna have a really nice energy to it.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I guess right now that would be “cycle”. Especially since so many of us are going through something right now. I hope maybe the song will resonate with some people. Sometimes it can be nice to just hear something that captures how you feel.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Backxwash is doing amazing stuff, Lonelyboyxxo, Funky Colours (Gruw and Apollo the Child), Charlotte Cardin, Nate Husser, Maky Lavender… the list goes on. Canada’s got tons of unreal talent.
