Five Questions With Theo Tams

Canadian singer-songwriter and former Canadian Idol winner, Theo Tams has released a brand new single, “The Last Song” along with a video to accompany the release.

“The song represents the moment you realize your own self worth,” Tams says. “It’s about recognizing you are enough, and letting go of the past.

Finally.”

For this single, he dove deeply inward on a self-reflective journey to break a painful cycle and visually tells the tale by being a man of many faces.

“I think we’ve all had that one relationship…” Tams considers. “The one that haunts us even years after it ends.

It was important for me to try and depict all the different ways I tried to measure up, while showing the toll it takes,” he continues. “I spent years trying to prove I was worth sticking around for, much to my detriment in the end. Slowly losing yourself, and your own identity, because you’re trying so hard to be everything and everyone for someone else…

I hope this song inspires anyone who may be feeling the same way.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m originally from a small town in Southern Alberta but have been making music and living in Toronto since 2008. When I’m not making music or in the studio, I’m outside hiking with my 7-month-old Great Dane Roosevelt, in the kitchen cooking up a storm, or with my partner and our daughter.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I’ve always written from personal experience, I find authenticity is easiest for me that way. I definitely gravitate towards love songs or love gone wrong haha. I consider my sound to be soul, first and foremost, whether it’s pop, RnB, or singer-songwriter, it always has elements of soul. And vocals are always up front, I think that is something that is becoming a bit lost in music these days, is showcasing singers who can actually sing.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Quarantine kind of put everything on hold but it’s given me a lot of time to work on my set and be a bit more picky about the flow of the Live show.

I’d definitely say be prepared to FEEL! I like my shows to be really personal and intimate, and I love getting to know my audience on a personal level so I talk a lot and encourage audience participation in a lot of ways. We will laugh and cry and feel together, getting to know my audience is my favorite part about being an artist, it’s what connects us as human beings.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

The Last Song- not only because it’s a really important song to me, but because it’s definitely been the song that has resonated the most with fans since the release of my EP Call The Doctor. I think it’s a song that, although it’s really personal to me, has the ability to make the listener feel as though they’re not alone and that someone has felt the way they have. It’s about letting go, moving on, and finally recognizing self-worth.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

I was raised by female Canadian artists. Jann Arden, Sarah McLachlan, Sarah Harmer, Alanis, Serena Ryder. These women are bosses in the industry and in life and I’ve always related a lot to their sound and their stories.
