Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi, my name is Tyra Jutai, I’m a Toronto-based songwriter, singer, performer, and producer.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I write the lyrics to my songs about stuff I’m going through, dreaming about or imagining, stuff in my daily life, really anything that inspires me – the music too. For me, the words and music are sometimes improvised and sometimes worked on for years. My debut single, “Still Good”, I wrote over the course of a few days, living in Montreal after being cheated on for the first time. The song is about self-preservation and the faking you have to do to get through difficulties in life or with yourself. All my writing comes from a deep place inside me that wants to relate and connect with people. Songs are most interesting to me when they’re written and performed by the same person, so I follow that in my own artistic path.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
My shows are dramatic and powerful, but still very intimate. I’m quirky too, so my banter between songs is always a bit silly, sometimes dark. I’m announcing a release party and performance for the music video for my debut single “Still Good” shortly, so you can follow me on social media @tyrajutai for details, and for other upcoming shows.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I currently have released my debut single “Still Good” so I would recommend that! Haha. It is very cinematic and thrilling. Not all my songs are in this style though, so look out for my follow-up singles and EP!
