Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Andy Du Rego, better known as Black Suit Devil, has released his latest album A Matter Of Time. Taking influences from Chris Cornell & Bob Dylan, his latest release is a fusion of folk with rock and R&B.
Right from the opening title track, “A Matter of Time”, you get the feel for this album. The smooth acoustics, the excellent horn section, and soulful piano. But then the vocals cover in, dark, deep, gritty and amazing. Black Suit Devil’s voice is something I haven’t heard in so long and it caught me off guard with how different it is, but that’s a good thing. In this music industry, unique voices get the right ears and this one got me within seconds.
“Main St.” is a slower jam, which you can hear the Bob Dylan influences throughout. This song sounds like a song Dylan would approve of. People would be mistaken to think this was a cover of a B Side of a Bob Dylan track they’ve never heard of while BSD made it his own. It is his own and this may be the best track on the album.
“Heart Of Sin” is similar to “Main St.” as it focuses on vocals and the strength of BSD’s voice. The guitar solo around the 2:30 mark is pure beauty, with the simplest chord progression showing style and grace throughout.
For a song titled “Queer Boy Blues”, I wasn’t expecting an upbeat and emotional ride. Throwing some country elements into a song with an excellent message about you can’t change who you are and how to get through things when the closest people to you don’t support your choices or how you truly are. For any of the lost people in life, this song hits on an emotional level.
The final track “January” is a 5-minute journey of love and beauty. The instrumentals throughout make this track fly through the 5 minutes as well as BSDs great vocals. Compared to the rest of the tracks, this song feels more real and raw as he is singing it straight from the heart.
This album is something you need to check out as I can tell you it’s something you’ve rarely heard before. Black Suit Devils’ voice is unmatchable and uncomparable to any recent artists, as well as his influences are shown throughout this album. It was a joy listening to this album compared to similar cookie-cutter albums and musicians I’ve heard over the last few years.
