Celebrating the release of his new album Country Roads, Halifax-based folk artist Daniel James McFadyen brought an intimate yet energetic full-band performance to Halifax on September 19th. The Light House Arts Centre was transformed into a nostalgic 90s basement for the night – complete with old TVs playing films, stacks of VHS tapes, a worn couch, retro gas cans and lamps, and was guided by the charismatic comedic hosting of Cape Breton singer and entertainer Rankin MacInnis.
Opening the evening were Dartmouth’s The Public Service Duo, featuring George Woodhouse and Joss MacNeil. With their acoustic arrangements, stories and hilarious banter, they quickly drew the crowd in. Their set may have been short, but it was more than enough to highlight their musical range as indie-folk artists. Performing as a duo, they also represent the larger five-piece band, The Public Service.
Halifax indie pop-rockers Good Dear Good were up next, bringing their infectious energy to the stage. With their second EP sook dropping on September 26th, they performed a handful of new tracks like “Fool Me” and “Better Off Dead.” They also treated fans to favourites including “The Storm” and “If I Can.” By the time they wrapped their set, the crowd was full of praise and excitement for the band!
Daniel James McFadyen came on stage as old movies played on the TVs and soft lamps added a cozy glow to the stage lights. A storyteller at heart, the Halifax-based folk artist has built a loyal following across the Maritimes with his relatable lyrics and high-energy live shows, as well as intimate acoustic performances. McFadyen was right at home (literally!) as he and his live band performed songs from his brand new sophomore album, along with favourites from his 2021 album and 2023 EP.
He invited singer Darragh Jessome to join him in performing their song “Find My Way to You,” before teaming up with bandmates Mat Elliot, Taylor McKnight and Cole Friesen for an intimate front-of-stage performance of his new song “Diamond.” The band lineup was completed by Sarah Surette, Scott Marsters, Mat Hughes, and James Shaw, all of which added another layer to the sound.
Throughout the night, McFadyen kept the crowd moving with upbeat songs like “Landmine,” “Caroline,” and “Build A Railroad,” but also slowed things down with tracks such as “Always In My Head” and “High Pay, Hard Days–” which he began by sitting on the stage, getting closer to eye level with the audience. Later in the night he even jumped completely off the stage to sing in the crowd and interact with fans.
