Evan Baxter – Five Questions With

Small-town roots, big-time sound—Evan Baxter brings raw authenticity to country and rock

From small-town Saskatchewan to the spotlight, Evan Baxter’s journey began during the pandemic, inspired by his brother’s guitar playing. Blending Chris Stapleton’s storytelling with ’90s rock grit, his debut single “The Show” has earned praise for its raw authenticity.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi I’m Evan Baxter. I’m a singer /songwriter from Demaine, SK. I’ve just released my debut EP “My Waste of Time”. I try to write music that means something to me, about my town, my family, and what I believe rural life is like for a 19-year-old kid.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

My most recent release is “Two Trips ‘Round the Sun”. I wrote this song for my friend who was killed in a drunk driving accident. It’s the prairie curse out here, too many families losing loved ones and friends. I wrote it for everyone who has ever lost their friend and still feels that sting. This is a song everyone can relate to.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

My songwriting process has kinda stayed the same. I’m a guitar player first so usually I like to make things sound full and pretty. I Love to write on my acoustic. Once I’ve found a progression I’m pleased with I tackle the lyrics. Usually, I’ll have at least a chorus or a verse to work off of. Sometimes songs kinda write themselves which is what happened with my latest single. It all came together. Or you know you battle with it until you’re happy. It can be a fight sometimes to find just the right phrase to use. I enjoy writing and the challenges it brings me.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

Coming up I have a televised performance for Saskatchewan telemiracle for the Kinsmen on March 1st, with performances at the Cork n Kettle in Warman coming in March and an acoustic show for the Lawson Heights Concert Series in April.  No plans for a video as of yet but I’m open to the idea.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

A big moment for me was getting the opportunity to open for Aaron Pritchett with Cory Marks and Matt Lang. That was HUGE! Getting to meet the guys and ask them “Do you think I could do this??”  Their answer was Hell Ya!! It gave me the encouragement I needed to know that I CAN make music, and I CAN follow my dreams!

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

Well, I’m in love with prairie artists right now. Josh Stumpf and Matt Johner will be huge names in music. As will my pal Kieran Garner; he’s doing some cool things. Brandon Scott and Mason Lewis are names to watch and check out as well. We have the best music in the world and it’s in our backyard!! Love my music family.
