LEXXICON ANNOUNCES PINK FRATERNITY OUT AUGUST 16th
Pioneering Dancehall/Hip-Hop artist, Lexxicon today announces the release of his album Pink Fraternity and presents the first single “Battyman”. With this album announcement, Lexxicon is making history as the first openly queer musician to release a Reggae/Dancehall album. Pink Fraternity is set for release on August 16th.
Lexxicon dedicated “Battyman” to queer Caribbean people around the world as a song they can connect with and that celebrates their identity. The term “battyman” has historically been used in a negative homophobic way mostly in Caribbean culture to describe queer people.
““Battyman” is a statement to say that gays, the queers, the theys and the thems also belong in dancehall” explains Lexxicon. “Many other queer folks like myself have started to embrace the term as a way to define the internal turmoil we have experienced over the years of not being able to fully be ourselves. Hip-Hop has made more room for queer artists in recent years and it’s time for dancehall/reggae to do the same.”
Speaking on the accompanying video, Lexxicon says
“The video has more an underground bold feel to represent the types of spaces that queer people have had a chance to claim as their own and often have parties in, away from the rest of the world. The popping in an out of the Barbie Doll and the interaction with Ken Doll is to add a more playful aspect to the video is a homage to all those queer kids that used to play with barbie dolls differently than the other kids. The group shots are there to represent community including allies that make lives better for queer people, we all need a team, a family or a group that will support us through life. Thanks to my queer and non-queer friends I’ve made it through my darkest days and now feel strong enough to bring my whole self to light in my music.”
Lexxicon is renowned for his unique infusion of Moombahton, Dembow, Reggaeton, and upbeat dancehall rhythms.
