LEAF RAPIDS SHARE LATEST SINGLE “SILVER FILLINGS” IN ANTICIPATION OF LONG-AWAITED ALBUM
Roots Americana band Leaf Rapids is excited to share the latest single, “Silver Fillings,” from their long-awaited new album Velvet Paintings. With the new single, songwriter Keri Latimer reflects on the metal receivers in her mouth and imagines what messages might be transmitted from the future, lamenting our predilection for destruction:
“Why is it so hard to love?” Keri and Joanna Miller harmonize over a softly swooning pedal steel. “It’s a miracle that we’re here at all.”
Hailing from Winnipeg, the group, comprised of Keri Latimer (songwriter, acoustic guitar, lead vocals, theremin), Devin Latimer (bass guitar), Joanna Miller (drums, supporting vocals, whistling), and Chris Dunn (electric guitar) are thrilled to release their new album on April 19th via Mile 33 Records and celebrate with a run of spring dates. The album includes previously released songs “Starling to a Starling” and “Night Shift”.
Keri shares about the latest single,
“This song is about war, world peace, dentistry, and time-traveling radio transmissions. It’s hard to watch the news these days and not write a song. It’s hard to write a song these days and not watch the news.” She adds, “There have been claims from various people, including Lucille Ball, that they can sometimes pick up radio frequencies with their silver teeth fillings. This doesn’t seem completely unfathomable, especially considering how strong the radio waves used to be, and a lot of us DO have mouths full of metal.”
The song showcases the harmonies of Keri and Joanna, with Keri’s higher timbre beautifully complementing Joanna’s smokey lower tones. Much of the album was recorded live off the floor, with additional overdubs and fixes. Although the band had booked the studio for two weeks, they only needed one week to track, as they were enamoured with the bed tracks for most of the tunes. This particular song, with its intimate and introspective lyrical theme, was meant to be kept simple. However, they couldn’t resist adding the gorgeous pedal steel tones of William Western Jr.
The song is complemented by an amusing moving visual.
“This video was made in 2 days. It’s amazing what you can do with an iphone, a packet of chewing gum and a bottle of ketchup,” shares Keri. “We wanted to capture the love and camaraderie within the band, showcase our underappreciated acting skills, but ultimately we hope this video and song both entertain and move people.”
