Lowest of the Low Share New Single, “Brave New World” From Welcome to the Plunderdome

Toronto, ON-based band, Lowest of the Low has been a well-known band in the Canadian Rock scene for over 30 years and was inducted into the Canadian Indie Rock Hall of Fame in 2018.

The band unveiled their sixth studio album, Welcome to the Plunderdome on October 6, 2023, via Sonic Envy Music/ Warner Music Canada.

The band has now unveiled a new single, “Brave New World,” accompanied by a music video.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Ron Hawkins from Lowest of the Low,  and countless years doing tours of duty as a solo artist.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

Welcome to the Plunderdome is an attempt to shine a little light in the darkness of these batshit crazy times. Soul v.s. soulless Capitalism, ska v.s. selfishness and backstabbing, and of course a little punk rock anger as an energy.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

I’ve been writing songs since I was about 16 and making records since I was about 20 so one thing I have successfully managed to do is avoid taking it apart and figuring out what it is I do as an actual process. I find our lives can become predictable and most things we do have long since lost a sense of newness or shiny-ness so I guard those things that are still imbued with magic with my life. Art, love, community… they still hold a certain magic for me and are worth fighting for and protecting. Although I guess the short answer is – I bash away at a guitar and sing gibberish till something happens.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

Our drummer David Alexander is a talented artist in his own right and is often at the helm of art design and video projects for the band. He has put together a video for the song Brave New World and we can’t wait to release it to our community. We are also off on a double team-up tour with the mighty The Iron Roses. Several shows in the US with them after a stretch of gigs in Canada.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

Being blessed to have spent 40 years making music and art daily is a highlight of its own. I still can’t believe my life is driven by waking up in the morning each day and thinking “ok, wadda ya got?” And I get to do it with a group of beautiful and talented people. Releasing our first record Shakespeare My Butt back in 91 was a wonderful new mountain to climb, touring countless countries – Canada, the US, Europe, Australia, and China was a huge highlight. But seriously every new record is an adventure and I feel lucky to still feel like a kid while I’m doing it.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

There are so many great bands around and new ones every day. It’s impossible to keep up. But just in our own backyard, we have had the pleasure of hanging out with and playing with bands like Ace of Wands, Altered By Mom, The Skye Wallace Band, By Divine Right, Jeen, Beams, Julian Fuego, Catbite, Bad Cop Bad Cop and of course our new pals The Iron Roses.
