Prince Amine – Five Questions With

Prince Amine Set to Showcase Dynamic Afrobeats at SXSW – Island Wave March 13th

Anticipated to grace the stage of SXSW at the Island Wave showcase on March 13th, Prince Amine, the Montreal afrobeats and R&B sensation brings forth a sound as rich and diverse as his multicultural background. Born in Morocco and raised between Spain and Canada, Prince Amine’s musical journey reflects the fusion of cultures and genres that have shaped his unique artistic identity.

With music coursing through his veins from an early age, Prince Amine’s upbringing was steeped in the rhythms of Motown and the legends of R&B, generously shared by his father, a veteran of the stage. Marking his 18th birthday with the release of his debut album, “XVIII,” Prince Amine swiftly captured the attention of the Montreal music scene. Following this success, his sophomore album, “Hram Vybez,” soared to #9 on the NACC Hip Hop Chart, gaining traction across the USA.

In a testament to his versatility and dedication, Prince Amine embarked on a musical odyssey throughout 2021, exploring the realms of hip-hop, rap, drill, kompa, and R&B. However, his focus shifted towards afrobeats in 2022, culminating in the release of his acclaimed album, Afrikan Boy, in June 2023.

Renowned for his magnetic stage presence, Prince Amine has shared the spotlight with international luminaries such as Dadju, Maître Gims, and Mr. Eazi. Drawing inspiration from icons like Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, and Burna Boy, Prince Amine infuses his performances with charisma and soulful energy, captivating audiences worldwide.

“Don Dada,” the latest offering from Prince Amine, is a sultry and infectious afrobeat anthem, woven with jazzy trumpet melodies on a dancehall flow. Infused with Prince Amine’s signature swagger and soulful vocals, the track embodies empowerment, self-confidence, and self-love. Set to a BPM of 100, “Don Dada” invites listeners to embrace their inner coolness and celebrate life’s vibrant rhythms.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello fellow readers! My name is Prince Amine, I’m an upcoming artist based in Montreal, Canada but I’m originally from Morocco! Marrakech to be precise. Well my mother is Moroccan, I was born there and my father is originally from Antigua (a small Caribbean island). I always had a passion for music and especially live entertainment as a youth. Fast forward to today, I’m doing just that and I’ve never felt happier to be able to pursue this career. I released all types of genres of music from Hip Hop, R&B, and Dancehall and now I’m onto Afrobeats! Check me out, hopefully, you’ll like a little something.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

I got this hot new track called “Don Dada”. It’s a mix of dancehall and afrobeats. It’s basically a story about being that “badmon” as they would say in patois, being that main character who’s living a fast life. I had a lot of fun making the track and it was produced by the one and only Frank’emcy who’s a dear friend, and brother of mine.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

Honestly, it depends on what type of song it is. If I’m strongly feeling something, I could just sit down and express everything on that pad. I usually get inspiration just from listening to other music and I would get an idea out of something else. If not, I usually like to sing random melodies and if it sounds sweet, I try to build from there. My one method is to have a beat that we’ve produced play in a loop and I would play around with it until I get that sauce cooked up, so a lot of experimentation but it’s a fun process.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

I’m going to be filming a lot of content, being a lot more consistent and annoying with my projects so it gets into people’s heads. For shows, I’m part of the official selection for SXSW in Texas so that is perfect timing for the new release! But I’ll also have some local shows coming soon and New Skool Rules in Rotterdam in May. I do plan on shooting music videos too cause visuals are key unless you’re Stevie Wonder but that’s up for another discussion. For the fans, and the supporters, I am releasing remixes on my IG page every Sunday to showcase some talent and fresh sound weekly while I’m still working on my personal project on the side so stay tuned!

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

I used to buy off beats from producers online that I found dope and would write to them. The turning point and highlight for me is when I started making the tracks from scratch with producers I know, in person, in the lab cooking up everything from scratch is so much better and a lot more fun. The free space of creativity is a game changer because now there is my signature touch, my sound, not anyone else’s. Unique.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

Ayye I got my boy Nino, a college friend and amazing guitarist who has his own band, Nefertiti Mix, that are pretty wicked, I give a shout to them and also this other band my dawg Shayne presented me to, called “Free Label Love”, I’m a pretty tough critique but these guys are on point, musically and on the live entertainment side. And check out my boy Frank’emcy, French artist, musician, producer, and true talent! There’s a lot more to name but I’ll give the flowers to these top 3! Love.
