Indie Rock Artist, Cam Blake Defies “Gravity” With His Latest Single
Recording artist Cam Blake unveiled his first single “Gravity” on October 6, 2023, from his upcoming sophomore album Satisfaction of Sameness on Adagio Music/The Orchard.
Cam Blake continues his progression as an artist and producer with this weighty new offering. Adding electronic elements to his indie/alt-rock tool kit, Blake delivers his strongest track to date. The track features standout performances by pop-rock artist Cody Lawless and electro-acoustic artist Mythos.
Cam Blake talks about the motivation for this first single,
“‘Gravity’ is about emerging from an emotional slump. Feeling more confident than you ever have. Appreciating the life that you have been given. You want to dance and be in the sun. But even within this massive high, you still notice that gnawing feeling at that back of your psyche telling you it’s only temporary.”
Blake gives a peek into the story arc of his second album and video series,
“Satisfaction of Sameness takes place within an infinitely repeating day. Following the frustrating and convoluted internal dialogue people face on a daily basis, like constantly looking at their phones all day for some kind of redemption, or being bombarded and distracted with media and political dribble, or being subjected to stupid trends and people you can’t help but compare yourself to. Hating your job. Having a relationship that isn’t working out the way you want it to…you fall asleep, everything washes away and you start it all over again.”
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi, I’m Cam Blake. I’m a musician, mixing engineer, and producer from Vancouver, British Columbia. I’ve been writing and performing ever since I was 8 years old. When I was a teenager I got super into making beats on Logic and Ableton. After years and years of practice and hard work, I’ve finally come to a point in my music where I feel my music sounds exactly how I want it to sound. I have my sophomore album coming out next year and I couldn’t be more excited and proud to put it into the world.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
‘Gravity’ is a song I wrote in 2021 while I was a painter. Not the cool artsy painter, but spraying and rolling paint in people’s homes… I would spend hours alone painting these massive rooms listening to bands like The 1975, Makoto Matsushita, Parcels, etc. That 80s style of music kept me motivated and energetic through my work week and I really wanted to write a song like that.
Then the idea for ‘Gravity’ came about. I wrote it about emerging from an emotional slump. Feeling more confident than you ever have. Appreciating the life that you have been given. You want to dance and be in the sun. But even within this massive high, you still notice that gnawing feeling at the back of your psyche telling you it’s only temporary.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
I used to pull a lot of inspiration from past relationships and those kinds of things. But I have been much more inspired to write about more important issues lately. The things that actually rattle throughout my mind on a daily basis. The whole new album speaks a lot more on worldly issues, serious internal struggles, etc.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
I’m playing the Hollywood Theatre on November 19th opening for one of my favourite bands Old Man Canyon – for their album release. We’re also playing the Commodore for this year’s annual King Fisher Bluez Christmas Party with an amazing lineup including Young Friend, Peach Pit, and many more amazing bands. All the proceeds for the Christmas show go towards 1-800-suicide and BC crisis centre.
What’s your goal for 2023?
This year has been pretty crazy. I was living in England between January and June with my partner (whose name is also Cam). The whole time I was away I was slowly working on plans for this upcoming album. My goals for the rest of 2023 is to keep playing as many shows as we can, to put out great music that I’m super proud of, and to expand my reach a bit. I’m truly so excited for this album to come out in mid-February 2024!
