Royal Castles – Five Questions With

“Sweet” is Royal Castles’ Anthemic Antidote to Feelings of Isolation

The Guelph, contemporary garage-power-pop trio, Royal Castles, are known for their energetic, hard-hitting hooks for days, blending riffy guitar licks, wooly bass, and ear-candified harmonies.

They have partnered again with producer Zane Whitfield (The Glorious Sons, The Blue Stones) and are currently releasing five new songs towards an EP called Singles Night.

The lead single, “Sweet,” is all about good love, good people, good times, and breaking free from isolation. The last few years have spun us all out and we need to remember “where the kids go” and make that our destination, together. “Sweet” is meant to play on repeat.

The song is an anthemic antidote to the isolation too many of us felt. It’s meant to make your feet bounce – it’s meant to be a party, and it’s meant to be a re-celebration.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Royal Castles are a 3 (but often 4) piece melodic-garage-power-pop band hailing from Guelph, Ontario. We love riff-tastic, crunchy grooves with sweetly stacked vocals.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

Following up on the heels of our sophomore album, Just The Hits, released in 2021, SWEET is the first single off of our new EP Singles Night. Building off the sonic flavours of our previous catalogue, this tune brings high energy and bouncy vibes with a strong call-and-response dynamic between the guitars and singing, felt throughout.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Like many songs to be written throughout the pandemic, SWEET is about re-emerging, leaving the isolation behind, and looking forward to where we can go. It’s about that moment right at the precipice of coming back out – like a bear after a long hibernation.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

We are stoked to be playing Hillside this summer on the Friday night of the festival to help kick off the weekend (hometown proud!) We are also jazzed to be heading North for the Go North Festival in early July as well as the Copper Kettle Festival in Creemore in August!

What’s your goal for 2023?

We are going to be releasing all 5 songs off our new EP, Singles Night over the course of 2023 (and maybe a little bit of 2024). We have five tunes set to be released. Bad Business Barbie is the next one, featuring the sultry voice of our kit-bashing leading lady, Katrin Sawatzky. Is it timed to the release of the new movie…? perhaps.
