Beau Nectar – Five Questions With

Beau Nectar

Beau Nectar release their new album, Two Lips

The eco-feminist duo Beau Nectar, composed of Franco-Ontarian artist Marie-Clo and Fransaskois artist éemi, released their new album Two Lips on Indica Records on June 2.

Beau Nectar is a collaboration between two bilingual singer-songwriters with successful solo careers. They deliver intimate, vibrant, and surreal electronic pop songs with graphic, poetic, and scientifically precise lyrics that draw parallels between nature and humanity.

After releasing their first single “Soleil des loups” on February 9, which describes the twisted relationship between the sea and the moon, the duo unveiled subsequent singles “Sous l’eau” and “Buds” on May 4.

On this freshman album, Beau Nectar offers haunting vocal harmonies on seven whimsical tracks. The indie electro-pop track “Buds” celebrates the intimacy of female friendships – or “Coeur qui caille”, showcasing our capacity to put on a different face from who we really are. Two Lips highlights the band’s derision and jest through wordplay, as in “À fleur de pot”, which describes the vulnerability of a plant that dreams of living outside.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We’re éemi and Marie-Clo and we form the female-fronted electro-pop bilingual duo, Beau Nectar. We met on a reality TV competition for francophone singer-songwriters in Toronto, Planète BRBR, and both made it to the top 2. Instead of getting into a catfight, as the world would have loved to see, we helped each other and created a BUDDING friendship that is still flourishing to this day. We’re a bit of an unusual pair, we live in different provinces and have found very creative ways to get together to play and make music about flowers, fun, and feelings.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

‘Two Lips’ is a vibrant, ecofeminist synth-pop album inspired by nature that draws parallels between Beau Nectar’s own experiences as women. It was released on June 2nd along with the music video for ‘Buds’, which celebrates the intimacy and playfulness of platonic adult friendships.

Two Lips was produced by Jace Lasek and Olivier Fairfield, two wildly creative individuals who made the album equal parts fun and dark.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

From nature, fauna, and flora. Marie-Clo started studying herbalism to better understand the world around her, and éemi had recently engaged in guided nature walks during which she noticed archetypes in nature. They both intersect at personifying nature and bringing awareness and empathy to it. We love having fun with music, arrangements, harmonies, and oddities within it.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

We actually have 2 wonderful tours in Canada coming up this summer and fall. We’re playing places from east to west such as Iqaluit, Whitehorse, Dawson, Vancouver, Victoria, Regina, Ottawa, Moncton, Montreal, etc. It’s a blessing to be on the road, we’re extremely grateful.

What’s your goal for 2023?

For 2023, the goals we had set for ourselves are currently coming to fruition. We worked incredibly hard, especially that our project came to life during the pandemic. We really wanted to tour our album Two Lips and we are doing just that with two cross-Canada tours. We also wanted to branch out into the Quebec market which we’re doing with the Fanny Bloom show, a few showcases, and of course signing with/our album release at Indica Records. We were also nominated 9 times at the French Canadian music awards “Trille Or”. The gala is in September and we’d love to win at least 1 cute trophy for our project. Otherwise, we are also going to rest after our fall tour to get back into writing mode and hope for creativity to return with rest.
