Adam Johnson shares new single, “Drinking With The Boys”

The 2023 SCMA Emerging Artist Of The Year, Adam Johnson, gets over a breakup the only way he knows how, by hanging out with his best friends. He teams up with CCMA award-winning producer Bart Mckay to create his best song to date. Similar to songs like Luke Combs’ “When It Rains It Pours” and “Drink Along Song” by Gord Bamford, “Drinking With The Boys” is a fun twist on a breakup song.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Adam Johnson, and I am a Country artist from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I began my career during the pandemic in 2020 by recording demos in my basement. I have since had two #1s on the Canadian Indie Country Countdown, two songs that reached the top 100 status on Canadian Country Radio and played shows for as many as 1500 people. I recently received recognition from the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards, where I won Emerging Artist of the Year.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

My latest release is called “Drinking With The Boys.” When I wrote it, I had the hook, and I knew I wanted a fun summer song, but I didn’t want to make it a cliché list of activities. I drew inspiration from a breakup, but instead of focusing on the heartbreak, I wanted to explore the resilience of overcoming the breakup and turning a bad situation on its head. At the core, the song is about friendship and the support you receive from them through good times and bad.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

When I write songs, I tend to pull inspiration from all over, but I always try to stay authentic to myself. I’ve written songs that tell stories about my life, and I’ve written songs that draw from modern Country like Luke Combs to rock country like Hardy. I’ve even taken inspiration from Taylor Swift’s pop music. Even when I write a song that isn’t necessarily a true story, I draw from my experience and emotions during similar situations. I think it’s important to remain open to the world around you and find inspiration from the vast experiences the world has to offer.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

I’m fortunate to have a busy summer this year. I am playing multiple festivals, including Tralapa Music and Sports Festival on June 23rd, the Songwriters round at Country Thunder SK on July 16th, and on September 30th, I am performing at Live Laugh Love Festival in Barrie, Ontario. I am also headlining a show on the water at Candle Lake, SK, on July 2nd called Gator Waterfest. I have many more shows coming up that you can find on my website at www.adamjohnsonmusic.net

What’s your goal for 2023?

This year, I am in the process of recording my debut Album, which I plan to release song by song over the next year and a half. Along with completing that, I want to continue to grow as an artist and a person. I hope that a year from now, I have more stories to tell, and I can continue to grow my career in ways I never thought were possible.
