The eleven-track release was recorded at Paintbox Studio, with the help of producers Lloyd Peterson and Rusty Robot, and Jonathan Alexiuk.

Ahead of the release, Karen unveiled two singles, “Waking” and “Still Life,” which do an excellent job of showcasing Karen’s soulful vocals and exceptional artistry.

“Waking,” the inaugural release on April 14, places Karen’s velvety vocals at the forefront as soon as the song unfolds. The serene instrumentation accompanying the track serves as a wonderful complement to both Karen’s mesmerizing voice and the introspective lyrics that evoke a sense of deep connection with nature.

The lyrics “Every sunrise you’re waiting for me, All the day and nighttime too, Meet you halfway; you love me right through, Yes you do; yes you do” paint a picture for the listener and portray a deep sense of reciprocated love and devotion.

The imagery and metaphors used throughout convey a sense of renewal, love, and awakening, leaving the listener with a tranquil and reflective experience.

The title track, “Still Life” was unveiled on May 12 and possesses a stronger jazz feel, with horns backing Karen’s expressive vocals this time around.

The thoughtful lyrics throughout the song explore the struggle between societal expectations and personal desires. “I’ve been caught in the woods of shouldn’t and shoulds, Of want-to and have-to and need,” does a great job of capturing that inner conflict.

The introspective lyrics and themes on this track provide an evocative backdrop for the jazz genre, encouraging listeners to delve into their own paths of self-discovery and embrace their authentic selves.

Towards the end of the release, “Thoughts Your Way” bursts in with a sunny and optimistic vibe. The lyrics capture a carefree and appreciative mindset, finding delight in the simple pleasures of nature and a break from the troubles of the world.

The joy-filled, expressive beat pairs perfectly with the repetition of “It’s a beautiful day” throughout the song reinforcing the sentiment of appreciation and gratitude. The track serves as an excellent reminder to the listener to adopt a positive mindset and appreciate the beauty surrounding them.

Overall, Still Life beautifully highlights Karen’s talents as both a songwriter and performer, with a mix of genres incorporated into her music. Fans of jazz, folk, roots, country, and beyond will likely have no problem finding a favourite on the release.
