Your ex and I

Your ex and I shares their single, “If You’d Only”

Montreal’s provocatively entitled Your ex and I captures the sounds of the original British invasion and later post-punk artists in their eagerly-awaited EP to be released early in 2023.

“If You’d Only” explores darker themes of lust, fantasy, and expectation while never losing sight of their signature sound.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We’re a Montreal-based indie rock band heavily inspired by the sounds of the British Invasion and post-punk. Though we love (and are still inspired by) a lot of new sounds and genres, we felt that there was a lack of melody-driven tunes that turned us on. We’re amazed at the success our first two singles have had and never imagined hitting over 60K streams with only two singles released, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear the full EP on March 17th.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“If You’d Only” is essentially a song that looks at the dark desires that many of us have while also calling out unreasonable expectations from those closest to you. Fantasies are enjoyable things that can quickly slide into addiction, but we hid it all behind a cute synth line – don’t tell anyone.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Anywhere and everywhere, to be honest. With everything we’ve all personally gone through, it was either writing a movie or finishing the EP. But at the end of the day, inspiration is only the first tiny step to the finished tune. It’s usually a little melody that gets stuck in your head. Finishing it is sort of like trying to remember a song you already know but have never heard.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

A Montreal EP launch is currently being planned for May 2023. Stay tuned.

What’s your goal for 2023?

Times have changed, and the industry has changed, but we still have the fantasy that the one right person will hear our tunes. Wait, isn’t there a song warning us about fantasies?
