Pembroke, ON-based singer-songwriter Jake Weckwerth has unveiled his six-song EP, Where’d Ya Get That Glow?
The EP has already created some hype in the Ottawa Valley, where the EP was written and recorded (Recorded in Calabogie, ON). Where’d Ya Get That Glow? is a rock-driven EP with Folk, Country, and Blues elements. There’s something for everyone on this record. Producer Collin Carnegie helps bring out all the sweet undertones of Jake’s raw rocking vibes, while the Mastering of Joao Carvhallo (Toronto’s top mastering engineer) brings out the loudness and subtle nuances of what the boys in the studio worked so hard to achieve.
Jake’s vision for this EP was to get a solid team of musicians to contribute to the recording of this EP. Levi Post is the drummer on all these recordings, and his volcanically accurate and unique drum style really takes the songs to the next level. Meanwhile, the piano and keyboards are done by Mr. Tony Silvestri, a true virtuoso on the keys, adding tonnes of musicality to the mix. To support the release of this six-song EP Jake Weckwerth sought out the extremely talented videographer Jake Neville from Pembroke, ON, to tell the story of these songs through the lens. All six songs will be supported with an official video so that the audience can see some of the wild stuff we get up to and some of the iconic landmarks vital to the writing process. Jake Weckwerth will also be recording and filming these six songs with a live band and recording engineer at Pembroke’s Festival Hall to show the viewers what these songs can sound like live in a hall setting!
Jake has been touring around the Ottawa Valley for the last five years and now plans to tour Where’d Ya Get That Glow? around North America. His goal is to reach out to a bigger audience, play festivals and halls, and see more of the world and other scenes on different scales.
“It’s been a dream of mine to tour, for as long as I’ve been writing songs I’ve had the vision of being on the open road having my music as my guide, leading to me to bigger and better things musically, but also to show me all the wonders of the world I have yet to see.”
Review
The six-song release begins with “Little Sunshine,” which immediately brings forth a rockin’ beat with a western flair, which is joined by Jake’s powerful vocals. The lyrics, “It wasn’t always this way, Let go my dear, you have nothing to fear,” and “Those were the days, now they’ve vanished in a haze,” and the music both possess an ominous, mysterious tone, which of course pulls you in. I found myself completely intrigued with this track, and my feet tapped to the beat throughout the entire song.
The third track, “That Glow,” is definitely a shining star of the release and where the album name was born. The song features elements of many genres, although rock and folk are at the forefront. The chorus has a poppy beat, and you can’t help but sing along with the repetitive yet entertaining, “I wanna know, I wanna know, where did you get that glow? where did you get that glow? where did you get that glow? I wanna know, I wanna know, where did you get that glow?.”
I can’t review this release without mentioning “Unwanted Me.” This track shows a completely different side of Jake’s sound, with a punk-rock style to it. On this track, Jake shows the listener that he’s not confining himself to one style or genre and that his talents extend throughout a large scope of styles. I loved this track and would love to see it performed live.
All in all, for a debut EP, I was shocked at the quality and insane talent that is showcased. Each song on this release shows off a different side of Jake’s abilities and sound. Fans of any genre will likely find at least one song they enjoy, so be sure to give it a listen!
