Shanuka Proves Her Persistence On Sweet & Sultry R&B Jam “Right Now”
Scarborough-based soul, R&B, and indie singer-songwriter Shanuka has unveiled the single “Right Now,” a sultry slow jam with 90s-inspired production.
The track features an atmospheric and catchy instrumental mixed with soft and sultry vocals. The 90s influence on “Right Now” is on full display thanks to producer Justin “Jwigg” Wiggins (Miami, FL).
With openness and vulnerability, the lyrics are about rough patches in relationships. Shanuka opens up about trying to find that light again with a partner that is struggling to stay on the same wavelength. On the track, Shanuka speaks to her partner about trying to reignite the spark they once had. The song’s melancholic tone perfectly reflects a very relatable conflict while also serving as the perfect moody slow jam for the winter season.
“Right Now” is the first release from Shanuka’s debut EP, set for release in 2023.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone, my name is Shanuka and I’m a singer-songwriter from Scarborough, Ontario. I make alternative R&B music mixed with a little bit of jazz and soul. Music has been a huge part of my life since I was little, and even if I weren’t making my own, I’d love and appreciate it the same way! It’s an honour to have an audience that supports me because I never thought being an artist would become a career I’m working towards.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
My most recent release is a fun, upbeat tune paired with deep and honest lyrics. It is about a relationship seeming to come to an end, but both partners still feel the love and connection for each other strong enough to know they could work things out.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
I tend to pull inspiration from my own experiences, but I also am a storyteller. Some things I write about aren’t necessarily specific to me. I come up with scenarios that might have happened to someone else or even write based on situations others have told me.

What’s your goal for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023?
My goal for the remainder of 2022 moving towards 2023, is to keep elevating and getting closer to reaching my highest self. My biggest goal and aspiration in life is to find peace. I’ve been through a lot since I was a kid, so I’ve struggled with my mental health for some time, but I feel I am finally becoming accepting of things that have helped me heal and find true love and happiness within myself. I hope to keep inspiring and spreading knowledge and love to everyone that supports
