Softlung shares a music video for the single, “The Other Side”
Canadian indie artist Softlung has released a music video for their second single, “The Other Side.” The new song, which came out November 9, has been getting picked up across North America, receiving national play on Stingray Music and international attention on Ireland’s RTÉ2 as well as play on several radio stations in the UK.
“The video is a bit of a nostalgic journey through my early childhood. I used to bury myself in music to escape the anxieties I had at school – come to think of it maybe I still do that. But I wanted to create a video to capture that lonely feeling.”
The video was self-directed and created with the help of cinematographer Josiah Maningas. It depicts flashbacks to the school band room, schoolyard, and childhood home where Softlung’s S.J. Kardash grew up. We also meet a young boy, who is either an apparition from the past or perhaps a new generation passing through a similar journey and carrying the torch – or in this case, guitar.
“The song is really reflective of the past, and confesses to never being able to make it all the way there without somehow tearing it all down and starting over. So it just made sense for this video to go right back to the very start. And hopefully in the end, we know everything will be okay.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is S.J., and I started Softlung earlier this year. I had been playing in a rock thing called Reignwolf for years, recording and touring all over the place with a couple of friends. But after parting ways from that, I started writing some songs on acoustic guitar and sort of stumbled into my first solo project here, which is so much different from anything I’ve done before.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
“The Other Side” is the second single I’ve released. It’s written about feeling like the supporting character in your own story – the feeling of being the underdog looking back on life and realizing we’re all just trying to figure out our own script. And sometimes, to keep moving forward, we just need to tear it all up and start again.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
I usually run to music when I’m struggling with something in life or when something is weighing on me. So, the songs usually come from getting into the weeds, picking up an instrument, and just letting the inner voices out.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
I’ve been rehearsing with a full band, which has been really fun. I think there may be some live shows in the new year, but nothing to announce quite yet!
What’s your goal for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023?
I’d like just to keep putting out music. There’s a full album already recorded, so I’m looking forward to sharing more and hopefully continuing to connect with more people.
