On the Heels of KPOP Hit Song Writing Success Modern Pop Songstress NIIVA Releases New Single

Toronto-based, modern pop songstress NIIVA unveiled her new single, “Friends,” on October 21 via RÊVE MUSIC and The Orchard.

Produced by Toronto’s Emery Taylor (Kiesza, R3HAB), “Friends” is best described as a taste of forbidden fruit. With smooth, intimate vocals overtop an infectious beat, this fresh new single bursts with the sweet, familiar anticipation of the classic “friends to lovers” narrative that we all know and love.

Listen to “Friends” below and learn more about NIIVA via our mini-interview.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, I’m NIIVA! When I’m not hugging my cats or quoting Hamilton, you can find me writing songs about being in love with your friends and also writing for K-Pop. It’s so good to chat with Canadian Beats and all the readers again. Thank you for having me back 🙂

You have unveiled your new single, “Friends.” What can you tell us about the writing process behind the track?

This song is mostly inspired by the relationship I’m in now because we started off as friends first, and it was pretty scary to me when I realized I had feelings for him because I didn’t want to lose that friendship. At the same time, like any new love, it was exciting, tense, and full of emotions, so I tried to capture that in the track. I wrote it with Matt Kahane and Emery Taylor over Zoom while we were still in quarantine.

What is your favourite thing about the music scene in Toronto? How does it compare to your experience in Vancouver?

I find that there is a great music culture here in the way that it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is or what time it is; if you walk into any venue where there’s live music, it will be full.

What do you like to do away from music? Any hobbies or activities that help to keep you grounded?

I love love love reading; I try to squeeze it in wherever possible. Right now, I’m in the middle of “The Invisible Life of Addie Lerue” and loving it. My favorite author is Alix E. Harrow – all her books are perfection. I also love painting and drawing. I find it really therapeutic.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

I will perform live at the RÊVE MUSIC showcase on Nov 15th at Rivoli in Toronto. Since I released my debut EP at the height of quarantine, this will be the first time that these songs, as well as my new single “Friends,” will be performed live, and I am BEYOND excited!
