PEI singer-songwriter explores history, nature, and life’s recurring cycles on his latest folk collection.
Prince Edward Island singer-songwriter Shane Pendergast has released his fifth album, Jack Pine, a thoughtful collection of traditional folk-inspired songs exploring history, nature, and the connections between generations.
Led by the focus track “The Maiden Voyage,” the album reflects Pendergast’s fascination with the ways history repeats itself and how lessons from the past continue to shape the present.
“I think a lot about the past and how it applies to the present,” Pendergast shares, referencing a favourite observation from Henry David Thoreau: “Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new.”
“I am always thinking about the cycles of life, and I think the songs on this record reflect that thinking.”
Shane Pendergast Jack Pine – Exploring Life’s Cycles
At the heart of Jack Pine is “The Maiden Voyage,” a stripped-back folk song about uncertainty, change, and new beginnings.
Inspired by the image of a ship embarking on its first journey, the track captures the mixture of hope and apprehension that comes with stepping into unfamiliar territory.
Interestingly, the song began during a road trip when Pendergast discovered its melody in the back seat of a car. He completed the lyrics the following morning but didn’t fully understand their meaning until nearly a year later.
Following personal upheaval and a powerful hurricane that struck the Maritimes, the song’s imagery suddenly took on a deeper significance.
“It’s a song about cycles in life; the process of breaking and building,” he explains.
To preserve the song’s emotional honesty, Pendergast and engineer/co-producer Mark Westberg recorded “The Maiden Voyage” solo and live off the floor, allowing the lyrics and performance to speak for themselves.
Behind the Recording of Shane Pendergast’s Jack Pine
The recording process behind Jack Pine was just as meaningful as the songs themselves.
Pendergast and his fellow musicians spent five days living and recording together in an old church. Their evenings were filled with stories, card games, laughter, and conversations around the fireplace.
That shared experience helped shape the album’s warm, organic sound while strengthening the sense of community that runs throughout the project.
Drawing inspiration from Eastern Canadian folk traditions, Pendergast continues to explore the natural world, the sea, and the passage of time through his songwriting.
With Jack Pine, he honours the musical traditions that influenced him while developing a sound and storytelling style distinctly his own.
Rather than simply revisiting the past, the album invites listeners to consider how history, change, and personal experience continue to influence the stories we tell.
