Malia Rogers Finds Light Within Loss on Cathartic Folk Release “Sunlight (A Good Death)”

Nova Scotia-raised, Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Malia Rogers returns with “Sunlight (A Good Death),” a healing, Celtic-influenced folk single that reframes grief through gratitude rather than despair. Rooted in the idea that grief is simply love with nowhere left to go, the track explores loss not as an ending, but as evidence of a life deeply shared.

Written while on tour in Ireland in January 2025, the song arrived in a moment of emotional clarity. After a late night following a show in Tramore, Rogers woke suddenly at 7:15 AM—the exact date and time her grandfather, John Matthews, had passed away four years earlier. A paleoentomologist, teacher, poet, and lifelong music lover, Matthews played a defining role in her life and creative development. What followed was a deeply personal release that transformed into song. “I cried for two hours alone in that room above the pub, and when I was done, I had this song,” she shares.

Musically, “Sunlight (A Good Death)” leans further into traditional folk territory, drawing from Irish trad influences and the music her grandfather loved. Recorded in fall 2025 with producer Neil Whitford, the track grows from intimate reflection into a communal experience, featuring contributions from Richard Lam (Irish bouzouki), Donna Garner (accordion), Jeremy Kleynhans (drums), Spencer Murray (whistle), and Aline Homzy (fiddle). The addition of gang vocals from Rogers’ siblings and close friends reinforces the song’s core message: that grief and love are meant to be carried together.

Beyond the music, Rogers is inviting listeners to take part in a collaborative video project, encouraging fans to submit clips honouring loved ones they’ve lost. The resulting found-footage style video reflects the shared nature of remembrance and connection. Blending tenderness, humour, and heartfelt storytelling, “Sunlight (A Good Death)” stands as a moving tribute to the people who shape us—and the love that remains.
