Quebec City Death Metal SANAGA Unleashes Debut Single “The Godslayer’s Oath”
Rising death metal force Sanaga has officially released their debut single, “The Godslayer’s Oath” (mixed and mastered by Jeff Dagenais of Kataklysm), marking the band’s first step onto the Canadian metal scene. Formed in the fall of 2026, Sanaga brings together long‑time friends and seasoned musicians with a shared passion for creating fast, melodic, aggressive, and evocative metal inspired by Death, Slayer, Amon Amarth, and Dark Tranquillity.
“The Godslayer’s Oath” was the natural choice for Sanaga’s debut. As the first song the band fully rehearsed together, it quickly became their most polished and complete track. Musically, it showcases the full spectrum of Sanaga’s sound, death metal fused with thrash energy and sharpened by touches of black metal.
Lyrically, the single introduces listeners to the band’s myth‑driven universe. The song tells the story of a void‑born entity created for one purpose: to slay gods and destroy their realms. Whether interpreted as an anti‑religious statement or simply a brutal fantasy narrative, the track sets the tone for Sanaga’s bold, storytelling‑focused approach.
Though new as a unit, Sanaga’s members are no strangers to the Quebec metal scene. They are active in projects such as Meet The Mailman, Foxy Queen, Devil’s Trill, and Warriors of the North. Their combined experience fuels a tight, high‑energy sound and a no‑nonsense approach to songwriting.
Guitarist Patrick Plourde drafts full song structures, vocalist Marc Verreault crafts the lyrics, and every member reshapes the material with their own style, resulting in songs that are cohesive, energetic, and unmistakably theirs.
The single’s artwork reflects the band’s name, inspired by the Sanaga River in Cameroon, a symbol of life, death, and myth. The dark, foreboding landscape and towering god‑slaying figure visually echo the themes explored in the music.
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Sanaga assembles seasoned musicians and long time friends with a shared passion for fast and aggressive melodic death metal and music in general. Dominic had the idea to form a new band with Patrick, who has a big creative output and the others joined in. Patrick had wanted to explore melodeath for a while and he already had some material ready so he jumped right in.
Tell us a bit about your recent release.
The Godslayer’s Oath describes a almighty mythical being created from the void itself who’s only purpose is to kill Gods and destroy their realms. More powerful than the Gods themselves, he is feared by all and they do not dare challenge him. It can be interpreted as an anti-religious statement or just a cool story of a badass creature. It also showcases a wide range of the different drives and vibes contained in our songs.
Walk us through your creative process when creating music.
Although Patrick writes most of the music and Marc most of the lyrics, each member’s insight is welcomed and encouraged. Everyone can come up with their own parts. We work together to rearrange the structures and build a coherent and enjoyable piece. Even though Pat’s drafts contain all instruments, everyone likes to put in their own style. For example, Fred, our drummer, likes to hear the songs for the first time on a drum less track so he can work his own craft without external influence. Lyrics are the last step, they are either inspired by the vibe of the song or picked from preexisting ideas that our vocalist has in reserve.
Now that the music is out, what does the ‘road ahead’ look like? Beyond tours and videos, what’s one ‘bucket list’ goal you hope to achieve with this release?
We hope that our release and our oncoming live performances pave the way for a full length album, we hope to get a good response and shine in the local scene, hopefully beyond local.
Every artist has a ‘lightbulb moment’ where things just clicked. Looking back, what’s the one performance or milestone that made you realize, ‘Okay, this is what I was meant to do’?
Being a quite new formation, this kind of moment happens every time we finish putting together a new song.
We love championing Canadian talent. If you were curating a ‘Must-Listen’ playlist of emerging artists right now, who is the first person you’d add?
Sanaga, of course!
There’s nothing like the energy of a live room. Where can fans catch you on stage next, and for someone seeing you for the first time, what should they expect from a Sanaga live experience?
Our very first stage performance will be at Sonum Fest in Quebec City on may 16th. As we are all seasoned musicians, you can expect a top notch performance with lots of energy. We have a no-nonsense, in your face approach to our songwriting that we wish to transpose on stage.
