Maddy Little Shares “Quicksand,” A Breakup Song About Sinking While Love Slips Away

Canadian indie alt-pop artist Maddy Little returns with “Quicksand,” a quietly devastating reflection on self-doubt, overthinking, and the slow realization that someone you love is already halfway gone. Rather than capturing the explosion of a breakup, the song sits inside the moment before it happens when distance grows, communication fades, and blame turns inward.

Written during a period of emotional uncertainty, “Quicksand” explores the feeling of watching a relationship slip away while questioning your own worth.

“I wrote this song about watching someone I loved slowly pull away and constantly blaming myself for it,” Little explains. The title reflects that emotional state — being stuck in patterns that feel impossible to escape. “Quicksand is so hard to escape once you’re in it. I kept having these thoughts about whether I was enough for this person. It felt like an emotional quicksand.”

Built around soft, restrained vocals contrasted with a fuller band presence, the production mirrors the song’s emotional tension. While the world feels loud and overwhelming, Little’s delivery remains intentionally subdued, reflecting the experience of internal chaos paired with outward silence. The result is a track that feels intimate and unresolved, capturing the loneliness of not saying what you need to say until it’s too late.

What makes “Quicksand” especially distinct is its perspective. Rather than recounting a breakup in hindsight, the song unfolds in real time to document the slow pull away as it happens.

“It’s not describing a breakup,” says Little. “It’s about someone pulling away in real time.”

The track also marked an important turning point creatively. It was one of the first moments where Little and her producers found a shared understanding of the project’s emotional and sonic direction, helping shape the cohesion of the songs that followed.

“The songs we recorded after this became so consistent and cohesive,” she notes.

Tender, introspective, and quietly cathartic, “Quicksand” captures the feeling of sinking before letting go. The song will appear on Little’s upcoming EP, set for release this spring, alongside her previous single “All My Fault,” continuing a body of work centred on vulnerability, growth, and emotional honesty.
