On November 14th, Australian singer-songwriter Hannah Bahng brought The Misunderstood World Tour to the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver. Bahng brought great energy, keeping it lighthearted, chatting with fans in between songs and being relatively new to touring, she seemed confident and happy to be on stage.
Bahng is touring in support of her newest release, The Misunderstood EP, which the crowd got to hear all the songs sprinkled in throughout the night, and some of her hit debut singles, “perfect blues” and “OLeander”
During “RIBS” Bahng and her guitarist, Liam, took to the front of the stage as the other members left to give them the spotlight. The singer’s soft vocals serenaded the crowd as Liam strummed the slow chords of the song. Fans took out their phone flashlights, lighting up the venue as everyone remained quiet until the end of the song, for a thunderous applause.
Bahng then brought the energy back into the room, as she looked for her “perfect allure of the night” to bring up on stage with her. The singer ended up picking a girl wearing one of her tour shirts. As she was moving to the front, Bahng showed her love for Pokémon, singing the theme song, which the crowd was totally into and joined in. As the fan got up on stage, the two danced, jumped around, and showed off her outfit. Banhg and the fan ended with a warm embrace and a selfie, which the crowd cheered them on.
Up next was a cover of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time,”. Judging by the audience, it was mostly made up of Gen Z (Bahng being 21 herself). Probably, most didn’t know the song too well, but caught on fast and were able to sing parts of the chorus. Her guitarist Liam added tasteful licks and solos that added a more rock twist to the song.
The setlist was well blended, with songs from her newest release and her debut EP, The Abysmal EP. She even included an unreleased song titled “Malibu,” which was a fun, upbeat track that saw her showing off her quirky dance moves. The songwriter ended her set with her big hit “perfect blues” which launched her career in music, and fans sang along, repeating every lyric back to Bahng
Hannah Bahng is just at the start of her career and is slowly gaining a steady and very dedicated fanbase. She’s shown that she’s capable of putting on an engaging and exciting live show, despite not having as deep a catalogue as other artists. Bahng is carving her own name for herself in the industry, and it’s something really refreshing and feels like she’s passionate about the music she releases. Vancouver fans got a taste of The Misunderstood EP and are excited for what’s to come next for the young artist, maybe a full-length album? We’ll just have to wait and see.
