Geneviève Racette – “Common Denominator” (Single Review)

by JamesM | Sep 29, 2025 | Reviews

GENEVIÈVE RACETTE UNVEILS POWERFUL NEW SINGLE AND CINEMATIC VIDEO “COMMON DENOMINATOR”

Acclaimed folk-pop artist Geneviève Racette releases her latest single “Common Denominator,” a haunting track about the painful realization that someone who always plays the victim might, in fact, be the problem. With piercing vulnerability and evocative lyricism, Racette captures the moment of clarity when the threads of gaslighting and manipulation unravel, and the truth becomes undeniable.

Alongside the single comes the official music video — a moody, cinematic visual that mirrors the song’s emotional intensity. Filmed in a forest at night, the video features Racette surrounded by women dressed in white, gathered around a bonfire. Together, they burn letters and papers in a ritual-like release, conjuring imagery that feels both cathartic and spellbinding. Directed by Catherine Deslauriers and Steve Gagnon and edited by Laurie TB, the video’s striking visuals amplify the track’s message of reclaiming power and perspective.

“Common Denominator is for anyone who’s ever been gaslit, blamed, or manipulated — and then finally saw the truth for what it was,” says Racette. “It’s about realizing that when someone always has a story where they’re the victim, maybe the one common thread is them.”

Review

“Common Denominator” is an intensely satisfying song that completely pulls the rug out from under a classic narcissist. The beat here is just addictive—a pulsing rhythm that totally amps up the narrator’s growing vocal energy and frustration. The music and vocals work together seamlessly to create a track that feels both confrontational and instantly catchy, perfectly setting the stage for the lyrical takedown that follows.

What’s brilliant is how the lyrics build their case against the perpetually victimized partner. They’re constantly repeating that same old story—“They broke your heart, tore it apart… you did nothing to deserve this”—but the narrator catches on quickly. Every subsequent verse brings in a new person the partner has thrown under the bus, from an ex to old friends, highlighting a glaring pattern that becomes impossible to ignore.

That chilling realization hits hardest in the chorus: “Baby for what it’s worth when I look closer / You’re the common denominator.” It’s a complete mic-drop moment, turning the partner’s endless drama into an undeniable truth about accountability. This track is a powerful, clear-eyed anthem for anyone who’s finally seen through the smokescreen.
