Wet Leg

MTelus, Montreal, QC
When Wet Leg took the stage at a sold‑out MTelus, it felt like stepping into some hazy 1990s grunge throwback — loud guitars, raw edge, and smoke machines working overtime. The kind of murky, sweaty atmosphere you half‑expect in a Seattle dive, but polished with Wet Leg’s distinctive flair.

Mary in the Junkyard kicked things off with their set, and what a way to warm up the crowd. The London trio — Clari Freeman‑Taylor, Saya Barbaglia, and David Addison — delivered a sound that balanced tension and intimacy: fragile vocals, rumbling drums, and bass/viola lines that at times felt ethereal, at others jagged. Their performance had a kind of “beautiful chaos,” a slow build from hushed verses to full‑bodied, distorted crescendos. They had thehe audience was drawn in.

An amusing backstage aside: while talking with members of Mary in the Junkyard, they mentioned that the Wet Leg team had actually run out of smoke before the show and had to restock. Given how fogged‑in the stage was once things got going, you’d never have guessed. The smoke machines were put to full use all night.

When Wet Leg finally came on, they leaned into the grunge energy even more — rough harmonies, crunchy guitars, and moments of sludgy distortion, but still with that witty, tongue‑in‑cheek personality that defines them. The lights and smoke blurred edges; there were instant mosh pit instincts, sing‑alongs, and those signature moments where the crowd and band became near interchangeable.

By the time “Chaise Longue” rang out, the energy felt almost explosive. What may have been ironic or playful moments earlier evaporated into pure catharsis. Wet Leg showed—they can headline, they can captivate, and they can turn nostalgia into something fresh, urgent, and very much their own.

Overall: a gritty, smoky, electrifying night that satisfies on both atmospheric and musical levels. Mary in the Junkyard set the stage well, Wet Leg made good use of every amp, light, and puff of smoke.
