PNE Summer Night Concert Series, Vancouver, BC
On August 21st, indie rock all-stars and hometown heroes Mother Mother brought the energy to the PNE Summer Night Concert Series in Vancouver, BC.
Mother Mother mark their 20th anniversary with the release of Nostalgia, their 10th studio album. While dabbling in a lot of their new tunes, the band gave fans a “nostalgia” trip for iconic tunes throughout the band’s career, such as “Hayloft”, “Verbatim”, “The Stand”, and “Arms Tonite”. The band also performed a few covers, including Nirvana’s “In Bloom”, Chappel Roan’s “HOT TO GO!”, and Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?”
Mother Mother is composed of Ryan Guldemond (guitar, vocals), Molly Guldemond and Jasmin Parkin (vocals, keyboards), Ali Siadat (drums), and Mike Young (bass). In 2020, three tracks from their 2008 album O My Heart, “Hayloft,” “Arms Tonite,” and “Wrecking Ball,” unexpectedly went viral on TikTok. As countless fans posted clips of themselves singing and dancing to the decade-old tracks, the band’s music streams surged, and they found themselves with a newfound global popularity.
Though globally popular, the hometown act is a household name in Vancouver. Passionate fans, friends and family filled the Pacific Coliseum for a bittersweet end to the band’s Nostalgia Tour. Lead singer Ryan Guldemond shared heartfelt stories about the band’s roots in the city, and joked about the band’s nervousness about having to perform in front of a lot of friends and family.
The band’s catchy riffs and interesting blend of harmonies between Ryan, Molly and Jasmin create a powerful and unique sound in the indie genre. Back in Vancouver, where it all began, Mother Mother’s hometown show carried a sense of magic that felt unlike any other.
