Canadian Stoner Doom Rock Z-COCOON Announces Tour Dates For New EP, Angels
Montreal, QC’s power trio Z-Cocoon has released their highly anticipated new EP “Angels”, available now as of June 6, 2025, via Earache Digital Distro. This third EP marks a major milestone for the band as their first full-band release since founder Marc Zolla transitioned the project from his solo moniker Pink Cocoon to a full-on trio with Michel Paradis (Drums) and John Burton (Bass).
Angels offers a fiery three-track dose of slashing guitar solos, savage blues-metal riffs, and melodic vocals that evoke the spirit of Dio, Pentagram, and classic doom. Recorded and mixed entirely in-house at Casa Cocoon, the EP channels lyrical inspiration from comics and raw personal experiences.
“We’re extremely proud to present Angels—our first recordings as a band. If you love timeless heavy music like Dio, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, or even blues legends like Hendrix, Trower, and Stevie Ray, blast this loud and buckle up, we’ve got more coming,” says Zolla.
To celebrate the release, Z-Cocoon will hit the road this summer for a series of high-voltage live shows in Ontario and Quebec (listed below).
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi Canadian Beats,
My name is Marcangelo Zolla, and I play in a band called Z-Cocoon on guitar/vocals.
Our new EP, Angels, comes with 3 brand new tracks, and it came out a month ago.
Fully recorded and mixed at Casa Cocoon (my place). Mastering sent over to Kent Stump of WoFat/ Crystal Clear Sound Studio in Texas. It is the first release that I mixed myself, so I’m pretty happy about that. It is also the first release with John Burton on Bass and Michel Paradis on drums. Great musicians. Artwork done by Camille Grenier.
The songs are all original in the genres of Stoner rock, heavy metal, hard rock, and grunge/doom.
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
The songwriting process usually starts with me coming up with the riffs and vocal melodies. Well then, play the song and jam it out with us 3. While we’re jamming on it, we’ll record a basic demo just to hear the overall idea, and that’s when the lyrics come in.
The lyrics are sometimes written before the riff is written, but it’s not often. It’s always riff and song structure, and then lyrics that follow the vibe and melody.
Right now 2 guys, Anthony Farina on drums and Alejandro on bass, recently joined the project to play shows, tour together, and record together.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
We got some local and out of town show dates coming up. We played our EP release show at Piranha Bar in downtown MTL.
Shows coming up:
Friday Aug 1 – Oshawa- The Atria
Saturday Aug 2 – Toronto – Duffys
Saturday Aug 9 – Longueuil- La Barrage
Saturday Aug 30 – Ottawa – Avant Garde
There won’t be any music videos for this release, but rest assured that does not mean there aren’t any planned in the future…
We’re planning on releasing an album once this Fall hits. Pitch it out there and see what happens, and do a real Canadian tour. Bigger plans in action.
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
Being able to fully record and mix without paying anyone and still having a good sound quality is probably the biggest accomplishment because it gives you a sense of freedom, especially when everything is pretty expensive nowadays.
Buying books on audio mixing, recording, watching videos, and practicing pays off. If we want to do a single, an EP, an album, or anything, it’s up to us. You have completely unlimited hours and recording for wtv it is you wanna do when you can do it DIY.
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
I would recommend checking out us cause I’m answering this interview while on break at work, sitting in my construction van.
All the band members work full-time, we don’t make a living doing this, and we’re not signed or anything, but we’re trying, and we do it cause we like it.
Check out Lil Wayne. He’s super good at guitar.
Thx for the interview.
