Since the release of 2024’s Songs to a Wild God, prairie folk songstress Mallory Chipman has been sharing her stories and songs live across Canada, with over 100 shows under her belt.
From festivals and club venues to an official showcase at the world’s biggest folk music conference, Folk Alliance International, Chipman has wowed audiences again and again with her cinematic folk-rock sound, cementing her reputation as one of Western Canada’s strongest musical voices.
But it hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows.
After a winter 2025 tour, Chipman returned home to find her house trashed and damaged by a trespasser. Distressed and shaken, she was struck by the risks and gravity of being away from home so often. Sure, she was making a version of home on the road — but the experience made her realize just how important it is to have a safe landing place.
That moment, paired with her touring life, sparked the writing of her latest single, “Road Song,” releasing on all streaming services Monday, July 21, 2025.
Fittingly recorded while on tour during a day off in Winnipeg, “Road Song” is a touching and raw ballad, with a gentle pulse that hums like a car on the highway and vulnerability that lays bare an honest depiction of road life — the mundane, the difficult, and the beautifully tender.
Featuring Brett Hansen on guitar and Lindsay Woolgar on bass, Mallory’s vocals and tenor guitar are supported with subtle musical sensitivity that takes listeners on a journey with her on the road.
“I will never take for granted how it feels to sleep in my own bed,” says Mallory, whose tour accommodations range from hotels and motels to crashing on couches — or even in her car.
“Some people think tour is all glamorous. I’ve even heard from some people that it ‘looks like vacation.’ Sometimes you’re well taken care of with great hospitality; other times, you’re staying in your mom’s cousin’s childhood friend’s son’s twin bed in a space-themed bedroom made for a nine-year-old boy. And hey — I’m just grateful for anywhere I get to lay my head. But I can attest that while it has its fun moments of adventure, or, if we’re lucky, relaxation, it’s a ton of work.”
Despite it all, Chipman notes that her love for playing live never wavers.
“There’s truly nothing that makes me feel in my purpose more than connecting with people through music — whether from up on the stage, or during the precious moments after the show. That’s what ‘Road Song’ is about: the peaks, the valleys, and all the things in between that make up life on the road.”
Catch Mallory Chipman on tour this summer throughout Alberta, BC, Ontario, and Quebec, with fall tour dates to be announced soon. Full show details and tickets are available at mallorychipmanmusic.com/tour.
The video accompanying “Road Song” was shot live in-studio during the recording session at No Fun Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba by Brodie Parahoniak. The recording was engineered by Aaron Bartel and mixed/mastered by Scott Franchuk. “Road Song” was written and produced by Mallory Chipman.
