NAPOLEON RELEASES BRAND NEW SINGLE “THE STORM COMES CRASHING IN”
Brace yourself—“The Storm Comes Crashing In” marks Napoleon’s thunderous return with their first standalone single since last year’s explosive Dear God album. The band’s previous release made serious waves, earning praise from Exclaim, idobi Howl, V13, A&P Reacts, Canadian Beats, and more! Their momentum continued to surge, with adds on playlists from Apple Music’s New in Punk and Spotify’s All New Metal and All New Punk playlists.
Musically, “The Storm Comes Crashing” follows the more Post-Hardcore/Metalcore sounds that Napoleon has been delving into on the last couple of releases. Heavy screamed verses, a soaring sing-along chorus, and a heavy headbanging middle section.
Lyrically, this song is about a high school friend who committed suicide, and talks about the guilt felt from not doing more, or saying more while they were still alive, but also recognizing that while our society is very conscious of the importance of mental health, a lot of it is performative. The opening lines of the track “Are you alright? I’m here if you need to talk [are] all words that mean fucking nothing” show how in society, when we are asked the simple question of “how are you?” we are conditioned to say “I’m good” or “I’m great!” even if that is not really the case because anything else is not socially acceptable.
Jon Elmaleh dives more into detail about the new single:
“This track is one of the most personal Napoleon tracks I’ve ever written. The lyrics are about a close friend of mine from highschool who committed suicide a few years ago. He was an incredible person, he was always so supportive of our band and would come to our shows when we were first starting, and always had my back no matter what. I really struggled with it for a long time because I felt a lot of guilt because when I look back, I can really see all the warning signs were there, but I never even noticed them at the time. I wish I could go back and say something to him, and let him know that no matter what he was going through, I had his back, and always would, the same way he did for me. But it’s too late…

”…I remember after his funeral, I was talking with one of our friends about it, and he was saying how part of the problem is that even though we always talk about the importance of mental health, no one actually does anything, he was telling how that very morning at work, his boss asked him if everything was okay because he seemed down, to which he told him he was having a tough time dealing with needing to go to his friends funeral later. He said his boss just made a face at him and said “well, let’s try and get through the day” and looked visibly uncomfortable. I think this is really unfortunate, we do a great job of making mental health something that is not as taboo as it used to be, but I know for myself at least, I now am more conscious of the mental health of those around me. In the song, there’s a line that says “when I look back, the writing was on the wall” and I’m embarrassed to say it, but that is completely true. If our listeners are able to take one thing away from this song, I want it to be that nobody is perfect, but if we actually act on what we say to each other, and are genuinely able to support each other when our friends are struggling, you may literally save someone’s life.”
