ABØN (LAUREN PEDERSEN) Releases New Album WINGS OF ADELAINE – OUT JUNE 6TH
Edmonton-based, Danish-Canadian singer, songwriter, producer, and composer, Abøn (Lauren Pedersen) releases her new album Wings of Adelaine out on Flatcar Records / Fontana North on June 6. The album is 10 tracks of orchestral music layered with angelic vocals, transporting listeners to faraway places. Wings of Adelaine will be available on all major platforms, with an accompanying video out now on YouTube.
Wings of Adelaine’s opening song, “Miracles,” sets the tone for the entire album: it features Abøn’s wistful, resonant voice, singing a haunting, wordless, rather Celtic melody, as it soars anthemically over gentle piano and lush strings. The video for “Miracles” finds her slowly walking and dancing in the midst of a magnificent, majestic seaside landscape that perfectly matches the sentiment behind the song.
Abøn says,
“The song ‘Miracles’ is a prayer for miracles to happen in your life, with gratitude for the miracles of the past, for the miracle of this day, and the reminder that you, yourself, are a miracle.”
“Stone III” features a brief but compelling cello solo that echoes the heartfelt vocal melody, while the multiple vocal harmonies of “Sunflower” are no less engaging. The stately pace and vocal breakdown of “Morphus,” and the mystery and moodiness of “Mirrors,” are beguiling as well.
“My nickname since I was a child was ‘bird,’ and I’ve always wished I could fly,” says Abøn. “I used to imagine a field of light and sound around our bodies that could repel gravity, and amazingly researchers are now just beginning to explore ‘acoustic-levitation’! ‘Wings’ was written with the feeling of flight, imagining myself up in the air, feeling how incredible it would be to soar so effortlessly through the sky.”
Abøn produced several of the songs herself and co-produced the rest with JUNO Award-winning producer Chris Graham. She also wrote all the music and mixed the album herself. The live instruments were recorded at Wolf Willow Studios in Edmonton by producer and screen composer Ian Armstrong, and most of the strings on the album were performed by Edmonton quartet Stringbeans.
The music is soothing but hypnotic, and would be equally at home in a house of worship, on a long walk, or while practicing yoga or mindfulness meditation. It’s music of peace and calm that provides a balm for listeners in an increasingly chaotic, divided, and confrontational world. Abøn’s soothing string arrangements, vocal layers, and harmonious movement bring a neo-classical canvas to her pop-infused melodies, and her vocal quality has been described as comforting while bringing a sense of vulnerability and honesty to her listeners.
Wings of Adelaine is a whispered, secular prayer for tranquility; music to amplify the quiet voices in our world – the wisdom of the trees, the tiny ants that know something more about collaboration, the mysterious world of our dreams, and the ancient tales of our ancestors.
