Fortune Sound Club, Vancouver, BC
On Sunday, May 25th, American singer-songwriter Lyn Lapid brought BUZZKILL: The Tour to Fortune Sound Club in Vancouver, BC. Despite an outrageously hot and sweaty venue, Lapid packed in around 200 of Vancouver’s most passionate fans and gave them a show to remember.
Lapid is touring in support of her debut album BUZZKILL. The singer’s move from Maryland to Los Angeles made her feel lost and out of place. The album tells he story of her ultimately feeling like a buzzkill with themes of loneliness and isolation. Being able to reflect while writing the album allowed the singer to process her emotions in a healthy way and find self-acceptance.
Around 8:45, Lapid and her band took to the stage, and the venue erupted. The members consist of Jacqueline Kim on guitar, Kayla Ramillano on bass, and Tyler Nam on drums. The band was particularly highlighted on the upbeat songs in the set, like “buzzkill”, “poster boy”, and “buttons” that got the crowd on their feet.
The singer-songwriter’s talents were on full display, showcasing her impressive vocals and versatility as she switched between ukulele, piano, and guitar throughout the set. A special moment came in the set when she was joined by KurtTheViolinist, a violinist from Vancouver who previously joined her in her last visit to the city. He performed the Steven Universe song “Love Like You” (Rebecca Sugar) with the band, and the two shared a warm embrace after.
Lapid commented on the previous venues they played on the tour, tripling the size of the Fortune Sound Club. She admired the intimacy of the smaller venue and spoke of her love for Vancouver. The city loved her back, handing her a signed Canadian flag that she waved around. Fans should appreciate seeing her in intimate venues now, before she undoubtedly moves to bigger and bigger venues in the future.
