Avery Dakin – “Too Close” (Single Review)

Avery Dakin gets real about romance with playful pop single “Too Close”

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Avery Dakin shares a cheeky Pop/R&B anthem for subjects of love-bombing everywhere.

“My new single ‘Too Close’ sounds like a rowdy night with friends spent unpacking a romantic misadventure, complete with silly chatter, playful stops, and a newfound sense of boldness,” said Dakin (she/her). “Playing on a self-confidence that empowers me to set boundaries, while leaning into tender pleas to be seen as a human being in my relationships, ‘Too Close’ lands somewhere between a dissertation and a diss track.”

“But now the light’s refracting / My patience starts to melt / But you’re not lookin’ for dimension / Just a sweet reflection of yourself,” Dakin sings on the playful pop single. “Don’t you get too close now darling / I’m not yours, not mine.”

“Accompanying this song is a lyric video that lends itself to the theme of feeling objectified,” Dakin said. “I got to take a trip down memory lane and revisit one of my favourite toys growing up: Polly Pockets. I wanted to show the comparison between myself and the doll; to create the plastic world that I’d been relegated to in this new relationship that was moving too fast for comfort.”

Review

Avery Dakin’s “Too Close” is a raw and honest anthem about setting boundaries and refusing to be put in a box. With moody instrumentals and sharp lyrics, the song dives into the struggle between wanting connection and protecting your own space.

Lines like “You say you know me—(HUH?) Only when it suits you” call out the hypocrisy of one-sided relationships, while the chorus makes it clear she’s not here to play by anyone else’s rules. Her vocals are full of emotion, making every word hit even harder.

Real, unapologetic, and totally relatable, “Too Close” is the kind of song that sticks with you long after it ends.
