Jackie Putnam Shares New Single, “I’m Leaving You Now”
Jackie Putnam’s latest single, “I’m Leavin’ You Now,” is a powerful reflection on the complexities of relationships and the courage it takes to move forward with kindness and respect. Written by Jackie in 1993, the song reminds us that not all love is meant to last forever—and that’s okay.

Meanwhile, Matt is celebrated for his contributions to Nova Scotia’s vibrant music scene, adding his own charm and talent to this compelling collaboration. dive into the story behind “I’m Leavin’ You Now” and what’s next for this talented artist!
What have you been up to since we last spoke?
I’ve received several nominations for my album, brought home a couple more awards “International Female Album of the Year – The Phoenix” and “Word Songwriting Award – I Wanted To Be Free”.
I flew to Nashville TN this past October, where I was nominated for 7 Josie Music Awards. This was my first time attending the Grand Ole Opry, which was an amazing highlight.
As an independent artist, my plan is to promote my album for 2 years. “The Phoenix” song was remixed into a bigger production, which now includes a horn section, and it will be released later this year.
I am currently writing new music and working on my second album.
You wrote “I’m Leavin’ You Now” in 1993. What inspired you to revisit and release it now in 2025?
I have always felt that “I’m Leavin’ You Now” is a strong, upbeat song and it shares what my songwriting was like during that period of time in my life.
Did you make any updates or changes to the song from its original 1993 version before recording it for release?
The updates that I made before releasing this song were adding in the bridge “Lie dee die lie dee die die die” and inviting Matt Balsor into the studio to record this as a duet with me. I felt that releasing this song as a duet would make it a stronger, more powerful, fun song, and I was right.
Can we expect more collaborations between you & Matt in the future?
I would love to record with Matt again. There is another duet included on my album where Matt and I recorded the song, “Jackson”, Johnny Cash & June Carter.
The song touches on the idea of letting go of a relationship with kindness and respect. How does this message resonate with you personally or artistically?
Relationships don’t always work out and it is okay if it doesn’t. Sometimes you were just not meant to be together; sometimes you were only meant to be together for a period of time; and sometimes you just have to “go your own way” just like Fleetwood Mac, but remain kind and respectful to each other, and not hateful. There are always two sides to the story, and it is okay to let go, and move forward.
Can you share any memorable moments from the recording process with the incredible lineup of musicians on the track?
I had packed a lunch for everyone as we were recording in the studio all day, which is located in the city. This way I could made better use of my recording time and get more songs done. This allowed us to break and eat there instead of wasting time by going out to eat and coming back again. The studio smelled like chicken dumplings that day! I had brought in homemade chicken dumplings in my slow cooker, sandwich tray, vegetable tray, and sweet tray.
“I’m Leavin’ You Now” fits within the country genre but carries a universal message. How do you think this song will connect with both country fans and a broader audience?
I hope my song will give country fans that familiar 90’s country music feeling with that Celtic fiddle added into it that makes you want to jump up and get on the dance floor.
What do you hope listeners take away from “I’m Leavin’ You Now”?
To be kind and respectful to each other when the relationship ends and to move forward in life.
What can fans expect from you both in the coming year? Are there any upcoming projects or live performances in the works?
I return to sea again to perform, as well as some concert shows and performing at resorts.
I have been writing my second album and plan to return to the studio again later in the year.
As an artist based in Debert, Nova Scotia, how does your hometown influence your music and storytelling?
I grew up in a small hometown, with most of my life being on my own and writing.
What advice would you give to aspiring songwriters about writing timeless and emotionally resonant songs?
Keep writing and making music. Inspire yourself by attending shows, collaborating with others, being kind, helping others, and being true to yourself. Learn the music business and the music industry. Chase your dreams, face your fears, and find the answers to your “what ifs”, you don’t know unless you try.
