Rachel Kane Shares New Single, “Follow You Down,” Produced by Son, Beatox
Winnipeg roots singer-songwriter Rachel Kane shares the poignant new single, “Follow You Down,” a spirited and vulnerable account of empty nest syndrome, produced by her son Beatox. The track will appear on Kane’s forthcoming fourth full-length album and first record in 20 years, Holler at the Wind, set for release on March 14, 2025 on Beatox’s Moonlite Media label.
“Follow You Down” speaks to a mother’s steadfast devotion to her children and the difficult task of allowing them to grow by letting go. It’s a song that finds strength in its search for catharsis.
“The song grew out of an impulse to write when I was feeling low about my children leaving home, but I think the song can be interpreted through the lens of many types of losses,” Kane shares. “I have struggled with depression for many years and music has always been a way to navigate pain and grief. There was so much healing in writing the song.”
The tune is a multigenerational affair that combines Kane’s husky vocals and understated blues grooves with Beatox’s hip-hop percussion, a merging of styles and sounds that unfold with unexpected ease.
“It’s the rhythm,” Kane explains. “We let rhythm lead in our songwriting. That’s why our collaborations always work so well. I wouldn’t have released this album without the help of my son, and I’m really proud of what we created together.”
“Working with my mom on her album was one of the more difficult things I’ve undertaken and one of my proudest achievements,” said Beatox. “It was emotionally challenging, especially given my mom’s struggles with mental health and addiction. I think a small part of me had hoped this project would somehow heal her mental illness. I know that she may never be fully healed but working on this project helped us both, and certainly helped me understand her more as a human being, a mother, and as an artist. She is still struggling but refuses to give up.”
“Follow You Down” arrives with a new video directed by Beatox, featuring haunting visuals that evoke themes of family and resilience.
As Beatox shares:
“The silhouettes in the video represent a mother caring for her children through life’s storms, guiding them even as they grow up, leave home, and start families of their own. My mom’s love of nature and belief in spirits is also woven in, and the grey imagery helps capture the heavy emotional tone of the album.”
Review
“Follow You Down” takes listeners on a sonic journey that mirrors the ebb and flow of life’s emotional landscapes. Its poetic lyrics blend vivid imagery with an emotional depth that resonates universally. Lines like “when the sky is black, I’ve got your back” and “when the rain does fall, I will hear you if you call” paint a picture of steadfast loyalty through life’s changing seasons and challenges.
The song’s repetition of “there’s no place I wouldn’t go” serves as a powerful anchor, reinforcing the narrator’s commitment and creating a comforting refrain that feels both intimate and uplifting. The lyrics flow effortlessly between soft reassurance and bold declarations of support, culminating in a tender promise to always “follow you down.”
With its relatable themes and vivid imagery, “Follow You Down” beautifully captures the power of connection and the comfort we find in unwavering support
