First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
What’s up I’m Kofi, I’m an artist and producer from Toronto.
Your album, Pettyboy delves deep into modern relationships, exploring themes like desire, vulnerability, and loyalty. What inspired you to explore these topics on this album?
Pettyboy is a concept album of all the words I wish I had said, and all the things I should’ve done in past relationships.
The album blends genres like rap, R&B, and Afrobeats. How do you balance these influences to create your signature sound?
I pay close attention to the emotions I want to convey, which helps guide my choices in production and lyrics. Ultimately, it’s about striking a balance where the energy of rap, the smoothness of R&B, and the vibrant rhythms of Afrobeats come together to create something uniquely mine.
Being both a producer and artist gives you control over the entire creative process. How has that impacted the making of Pettyboy, especially when it comes to experimenting with different sounds and concepts?
Being able to do everything from coming up with the initial ideas to mastering the songs allows me to make every aspect of the song EXACTLY how I want it. I bring in other producers/engineers but I’m able to work with them on another level where their creativity and expertise enhance the vision. It also lets me be selective on who I work with. The majority of the project was just made in my home studio with two of my best friends.
You’ve collaborated with artists like Pressa and caught the attention of heavyweights like Drake and Kardinal Offishall. How have these connections helped you evolve as an artist?
In Toronto we’re blessed to have made many of the biggest artists in the world, however it’s rare that they support each other. I’m so lucky that they’ve all shown me love.. It’s inspiring.
After gaining over 67 million streams and growing a global fanbase, how do you feel about your journey so far, and where do you see yourself heading next in your music career?
Everyday I’m grateful that my music has been able to touch so many people. I’m far from done. My next step is to release more music. After this album I’m gonna start spamming as a thank you to all my fans who were patient with me while I was putting this album together.
