The second annual Sound of Remembrance concert is happening on November 9th at the National Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
This special event honors the sacrifices of Canada’s service members and supports Soldier On Canada, a program helping retired Armed Forces members overcome mental and physical challenges through sport and activity. The evening will feature a cocktail hour, dignitaries including guest of honor General Rick Hillier, and soul-stirring performances from award-winning country artist George Canyon, “The Singing Soldier” Graham Trude, and Jason Price.
We spoke with Graham Trude in the lead-up to this event. A former Afghanistan veteran and police officer from Collingwood, ON, Graham founded Countrycore Records and used music to support veterans. Let us know if you’d like to connect with him to discuss the concert and his inspiring work.
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Graham Trude, and I’m a proud Canadian from Collingwood, Ontario. My life journey has been a blend of service, struggle, and storytelling. I’m an Afghanistan veteran, and a former first responder, and now, I’m pursuing my passion for music and writing. Through my songs and stories, I aim to share not only my experiences but also to honour the lives and memories of those who’ve served. My work, whether it’s a song or an upcoming book chapter, speaks to resilience, mental health, and the raw truths of service and survival. At this stage in my life, I’m also dedicated to giving back. I’m involved in events like the Sound of Remembrance, which I co-organize to support veterans, and first responders and raise funds for Soldier On Canada. Music is my way of reaching out to others, fostering connection, and sharing the stories that often go unheard.
What inspired you to start the Sound of Remembrance country music concert and charitable event?
The Sound of Remembrance came to life as a way to honour the memories of our fallen heroes and to recognize the resilience of our veterans and first responders. As a veteran and former first responder myself, I’ve experienced the toll that service takes, and I know how isolating those struggles can feel. This event is a celebration of resilience and remembrance—a moment for us to come together, share stories, and support each other.
I wanted to create something more than just a memorial service. Music has always been a healing force for me, so I thought, why not bring people together through music? The Sound of Remembrance is about building a supportive community, raising awareness, and making sure that our veterans and first responders know they are not alone. All proceeds go to Soldier On Canada, an organization close to my heart, dedicated to helping those who’ve served to rebuild their lives.
How did you come up with the idea to partner with Soldier On Canada for this event?
Choosing Soldier On Canada as a partner for the Sound of Remembrance was a natural decision. Soldier On has been doing incredible work supporting veterans and first responders in reclaiming their health and finding community through sports and recreation. I’ve seen firsthand how challenging the transition can be after service, and how vital it is to have organizations that truly understand and are dedicated to helping veterans and first responders rebuild their lives.
When I envisioned the Sound of Remembrance, I wanted it to be more than a celebration—it needed to be a powerful source of support. Partnering with Soldier On allowed us to give back directly to the people who have served. By combining the healing power of music with Soldier On’s commitment to rehabilitation, we’re not just remembering those who sacrificed but also actively supporting those who continue to carry the weight of their service.
Can you tell us more about the performances and what makes the artist lineup, including yourself, George Canyon and Jason Price, special for this event?
The artist lineup for the Sound of Remembrance is a huge part of what makes this event so meaningful. Every performer brings something personal to the stage, whether it’s their own experiences in service, connections to the military community, or a shared passion for supporting veterans and first responders. These artists understand the depth of this event and have a genuine desire to be there—not just as performers but as advocates.
The lineup includes veterans, first responders, and artists who have a powerful respect for those who’ve served. Each song is chosen to reflect resilience, hope, and remembrance. This isn’t just a concert—it’s a tribute and a call to come together as a community. Our performers bring stories to life, reminding us of the sacrifices made and celebrating the spirit of those who continue to serve. It’s an incredibly unique experience because everyone on stage is there with a purpose, which makes each performance deeply moving and impactful.
What is the significance of having General Rick Hillier as the guest of honour for the evening?
Having General Rick Hillier as our guest of honour for the Sound of Remembrance is an incredible privilege and holds deep significance. General Hillier is not only one of Canada’s most respected military leaders, but he’s also a symbol of dedication and strength to many of us who have served. His leadership has had a profound impact on the Canadian Forces, especially during some of the most challenging periods, like the mission in Afghanistan. His presence brings a level of honour and recognition to the event that’s felt by every veteran and first responder in the room.
General Hillier’s commitment to advocating for our military community has continued even after his service. By joining us, he’s standing in solidarity with veterans, first responders, and their families. His involvement sends a powerful message of support and reminds us all of the importance of honouring those who’ve sacrificed and served. It’s a true testament to the spirit of remembrance and resilience that this event is all about.
In what ways do you think music and events like this can help veterans and first responders struggling with PTSD and other challenges?
Music and events like the Sound of Remembrance have a unique way of reaching veterans and first responders who are battling PTSD and other challenges. Music is incredibly powerful—it can break down walls and speak to the emotions that many of us struggle to express. For those dealing with trauma, sometimes words aren’t enough, but a song can make them feel understood and connected. It brings people together, creating a safe space to experience and process emotions.
Events like this are even more impactful because they remind veterans and first responders that they’re not alone in their struggles. They’re surrounded by a community of people who understand, care, and want to support them. It’s not just about watching a performance; it’s about being part of something bigger, a shared experience that allows for healing and connection. When we gather for the Sound of Remembrance, we’re building a supportive network, breaking through isolation, and reinforcing the message that help is out there, and there are people who genuinely care.
You’re very active in the veteran and first responder wellness communities. Can you talk about some of the initiatives or projects you’re most proud to be involved in?
I’m incredibly proud to be involved in several initiatives that align with my mission to support veterans and first responders, but the Sound of Remembrance stands out as a project that’s closest to my heart. Bringing this event to life has been a way to give back and create something lasting for our community. The fact that it raises funds for Soldier On Canada, which directly impacts the lives of those who’ve served, makes it even more meaningful.
Another initiative I’m proud of is the auctioning of a custom walnut acoustic guitar inscribed with the names of 158 Canadian men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan. This project holds deep significance, as each name represents a story and a legacy. By auctioning this guitar, we’re raising funds to support Soldier On’s mission and ensuring that these heroes are remembered in a truly unique way.
Lastly, as a songwriter and artist, I’m proud of my music and its ability to shed light on mental health, resilience, and the struggles faced by veterans and first responders. I see my songs as a platform for raising awareness, and I’m honoured every time someone tells me that my music has resonated with them or helped them feel less alone in their journey.
