Five
Join us this week is Canadian singer-songwriter Craig Robertson, who has emerged as a compelling voice in the roots music scene. Robertson’s latest album, Running The Other Way, is available everywhere now and marks a new creative peak. Bringing ten deeply personal tracks that were recorded in his home studio in Cambridge, Ontario. Inspired by personal experiences and influenced by artists such as R.E.M., Robertson’s work is both introspective and universally resonant to all. Be sure to check out our interview with this creative genius right through the link here.
Four
Hailing from Edmonton, it’s Lily Monaghan returning with the gorgeously intimate new single “Mona Lisa,” available on all streaming platforms. This will be our first preview of her next release, slated for next year in 2025.
Although “Mona Lisa” is simply arranged around her voice and acoustic guitar, she is also supposed by fellow rising Canadian folk duo Jed & The Valentine. This new single severs as the first taste of how Lily’s evolved as a singer-songwriter since her debut release. But you check out the the lyrical video for “Mona Lisa” within the article here.
Three
Next up is Shealagh Rose, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Hamilton, Ontario. She’s had quite the music journey already, in 2017 she was a regional finalist in “CBC’s Searchlight competition” with her song, “Dream.” But she joins us today with the latest of her sophomore EP, a song called “Tunnel Vision.” A beautifully apathetic look at modernity and short-term narrowed thinking in our environment. The new single is available across all streaming platforms right now. Listen to it now in our article here.
Two
Taking the number two spot this week on our list will be JUNO-nominated artist DENIELLE BASSELS. After the success of her highly acclaimed and JUNO-nominated “Little Bit a’ Love,” she’s back with her first single off the third studio album, It Goes Like This. The new single “Lighthouse” is available now across all your favourite streaming services, but the album will be available on February 2025. It promises a daring, imaginative journey and epic narrative. But if you want to hear it or read the rest of the article, you can find it here.
BONUS: Canadian Beats Passport
This week’s bonus recommendation will bring us to the Finnish industrial band, Cardinal Noire. Their latest single, “Gun Metal” is a sonic war cry that plunges deep into themes of societal decay with unrelenting force. The track’s a brutal showcase of the band’s signature sound. Setting up the stage for their upcoming album Vitriol, which is set for release on December 6th of this year through Artoffact Records. The drums hit like sledgehammers on sheet metal, each strike more visceral than the last. I recommend you head over to our Canadian Beats Passport article with Cardinal Noire and hear the new single here.
One
Then we only had one spot left on our list for the best new music this week. Suddenly, JUNO-nominated Canadian rock band Silverstein appeared! With their 25th anniversary on the horizon, their sophomore album “Discovering the Waterfront” has recently crossed and been certified Gold right here in Canada. Those achievements pushed them to the deserts of Joshua Tree, the result is the band’s most eclectic and prolific body of work yet. A double album called Antibloom / Pink Moon draws from across Silverstein’s diverse influences. Check out the first single off of the album, “Confession” and the video in our article here.
