Andie Loren – Five Questions With

Toronto’s Andie Loren Offers Playful Dream Pop Track “Hearts Grow Wide”

Andie Loren is a Toronto-based singer/songwriter whose music is a mix of dream pop and rock. Her lyrics focus on love, loss, and the rollercoaster of emotions and questions we have in relationships while her songs are characterized by the desire to understand human nature, and how love can consume us in positive and negative ways.

Loren’s rich, warm vocals are heartfelt and her approach to writing is honest, straightforward, and open. The upcoming EP, Some Special Light, is a concept album that looks into our desperate need to matter to someone and the highs and lows that come along with it.

Her passionate, Thomas Hammerton-produced guitar-driven single, “Hearts Grow Wide,” is filled out with dreamy synth, melodic bass, and energetic pop rock drumming. The inspiration for the track derives from modern dating culture and the longing to connect with someone romantically.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Andie Loren and I’m a singer/songwriter in Toronto.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

My latest release is a pop-rock song about locking eyes with someone from across the room and the possibilities of a romantic connection.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

There are two things that happen when I write a song. Sometimes I have a melody in my head and record it in my voice memos and build it from there. The other thing that I tend to do, more often than the first, is to pick up the guitar and strum some chords and sing gibberish lyrics. A word or phrase may come out from that gibberish and I sometimes base the song on what words came out of me organically at that moment. It may seem strange to others but that’s the way I do it. I don’t consider myself a poet in any way and I don’t use a lot of imagery in my writing. I write what I feel and how I see things, and I try to be direct and honest with my song lyrics.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

I’ve been spreading the word about my new song on social media and posting features and reviews. “Hearts Grow Wide” is the first single off my upcoming EP Some Special Light and it’s a concept album. Each song is like a little scene from a movie. It follows a relationship from start to finish. I’m excited to share this story with listeners and I’m looking forward to performing the songs live at the Burdock Music Hall in October.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

I’ve been singing and writing music for a long time but I’ve been out of the loop and music scene after having my son. I didn’t think I’d have the chance to do this again. Now that he’s almost nine, I’m getting back into it and I’m really grateful. All these songs are pouring out and it’s been really cathartic for me.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

Set Feux is a fantastic new artist. Her album Young and Lonely is definitely worth a listen.
