Maddisun shares new single, “Crawl” (Interview)

BC-based singer-songwriter Maddisun has unveiled a new single, “Crawl.”

“Crawl” is a powerful, uplifting alternative rock anthem about perseverance and nurturing good things. With sounds reminiscent of early 2000s alternative and classic rock, it’s for those who refuse to let anything stand in their way. Produced by Ian Docherty (July Talk), it’s the 2nd of 3 singles from Maddisun that are due in 2024. This track also includes an official music video filmed on a vintage Super 8 camera, making it a dynamic and inspiring rock and singer-songwriter release.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our listeners?

Hi! Maddisun here, musician/artist/songwriter from Cranbrook, BC. I grew up in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains, and music was always around me. Taking inspiration from classic ‘70s rock n roll, and modern alternative music. I like to brand myself as “Joni Mitchell” on rock n roll steroids.

“Feelin’ It Again” marked your first single of 2024. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this song and how it came together?

This song sparked after a lot of solo travelling around with my music. I was writing about the ups and downs that I experience when I’m on the road, and just the entire journey of the “artist’s life”

The song started out as this jingle I would sing to kind of calm myself (the lyrics “It’s gonna be fine, gonna be just alright this time”) I knew the song was gonna be a little moodier + edgier sound-wise and build to a huge expressive outro.

This track represents your first collaboration with producer Ian Docherty. How did working with him influence the final sound of the song?

Such a great collaboration! Working with Ian was fantastic. I was really hands-on with the whole experience, Ian encouraged me to play a lot of the parts on the songs and put my artistic stamp on them. I wanted to go with a more alternative rock sound for this song (and “Crawl”) and I knew Ian would be the perfect fit. Also, I think the song took a bit of sonic inspiration from the Toronto scene, where I recorded and was performing/networking a lot. We were in the studio for a solid 4 days (10+ hour days) of straight creative magic!!! some amazing friends (Dylan Burrett on bass and Dani Nash on drums) also joined us in recording and collaborating. I had lots of friends visit me in the studio to hang out and listen to the songs, it felt like a true moment out of the early days of music. something that made me feel really like Joni Mitchell or Stevie Nicks.

“Feelin’ It Again” reflects on the highs and lows of an artist’s journey. Can you share some personal experiences that influenced the themes of this track?

A LOT of travelling all over the world with my music, and mostly alone! there are so many ups and downs (literally I flew like 30,000 miles in 2022) so I couldn’t help but reflect on that. Being a solo (female) artist, there are a lot of experiences that I go through that are so impactful. It can be a really lonely process, this journey to be seen.

Your newest single is “Crawl,” which is available now. What can you tell us about this new track?

This track is the second song produced with Ian! An uplifting and inspiring alt-rock anthem. The inspiration came to me one day when I was walking around and I couldn’t get this one song out of my head (It was “Beast Of Burden” – Rolling Stones) and I realized a lot of my life (and love life) is like that. I’ll get an idea or a person stuck in my head and I can’t think about anything else! Crawl captures the spirit of perseverance, resilience, and the idea that nurturing good things leads to great things.

The song also features an official music video filmed in Toronto on a Super 8mm Film Camera! out now.

Are there any upcoming performances or events where fans will get a chance to hear “Crawl” live?

Yes!!! I’m playing it at all my live shows now. Check my tour at https://www.maddisunmusic.com/tourmaddisun for all the dates!!! NEWLY announced is my showcase in Mississauga for Folk Music Ontario October 3-6!
